This FAQ contains information for students who were assigned an RTW standing prior to the Winter 2011 term. If you were assigned an RTW standing at the end of the Winter 2011 term or later please access the appropriate FAQ.

Students assigned an RTW standing prior to Winter 2011 may apply for reinstatement (or transfer) after a 12 month absence from courses has been completed. Please complete the Request for Reinstatement form and the Request for Reinstatement - Supplementary form and submit to your program advisor. You will be contacted by email by a program advisor once your application has been reviewed.

 

FAQ for students assigned an RTW standing prior to the Winter 2011

 

When may I resume my studies after being assigned a Required to Withdraw academic standing?

You may resume your studies after a period of 12 months.  For example, if you were assigned an RTW standing at the end of the Fall 2009 term, you may resume your studies at the start of the Winter 2011 term.  Similarly, if you were assigned an RTW standing at the end of the Winter 2010 term, you may request reinstatement to resume your studies at the start of the Spring/Summer term 2011.

How do I let my Program know that I wish to resume my studies?

You must complete and submit the Request for Reinstatement form.

When should I submit my Request for Reinstatement form?

You may submit your Request for Reinstatement form as early as early as possible prior to when you wish to resume  your studies.  Please see the deadlines for reinstatement and transfer.

Is there a deadline date to submit my Request for Reinstatement form?

Yes, your Request for Reinstatement form must be submitted by these deadline dates.

Is there a fee for submitting my Request for Reinstatement form?

No, there is no fee for submitting the Request for Reinstatement form.

Is my return to studies guaranteed after completing the Request for Reinstatement form?

No.  You may not be able to resume studies due to space restrictions and Ryerson’s commitment to new and continuing students.  You should also be aware that the courses you need may not be available in the term you wish to resume your studies.  Your program advisor will provide you with the information you need.

What happens if my program department tells me that I cannot resume my studies?

If you are not allowed to resume your studies you will be formally withdrawn from your program.  At this point you have many choices to make and you should consult with your program advisor. Workshops to help support your academic goals are available from the Centre for Student Development and Counselling.

Why do I have to submit a letter outlining why I believe I was assigned a Required to Withdraw Standing?

We want you to be successful.  Your program advisor wants to ensure that you have had sufficient time to deal effectively with any issues that prevented you from doing your best in your program of study.   Your advisor may also recommend attendance at, for example, Time Management or other study skills workshops available through The Learning Success Centre to further ensure your success.

I’m not sure I want to return to my old program.  Who can I talk to?

There are a number of support services available to assist you in making your decision.  If you are thinking about transferring to another program, you should contact Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment Of course, you may always contact your program advisor to discuss your situation and options available to you. Workshops to help support your academic goals are available from the Centre for Student Development and Counselling.

I really do not want to return to my old program.  What should I do?

If you do not wish to return to your program of studies, you have many choices to make.  You may wish to discuss transferring to another Ryerson program with an advisor from Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment, and workshops to help support your academic goals are available from the Cenrtre for Student Development and Counselling.

I have taken some courses at another university or college while I was Required to Withdraw from my Ryerson program.  Can I get credit for those studies?

No.  As part of the conditions of your RTW Standing no credit will be granted for studies taken elsewhere during this time.

I’m not yet ready to resume my studies.  Can I take courses through The Chang School?

After your 12 month suspension from studies has been completed, you may enroll in The Chang School classes.   However, you are strongly advised to discuss this option with a program advisor prior to enrolling.

Will I receive credit for The Chang School courses taken after my 12 month suspension from studies has been completed?

Depending on the courses taken and your performance (grades) the courses may be credited to your program.   However, you are strongly advised to discuss this option with a program advisor prior to enrolling.

May I take courses at another university or college for credit?

You will not receive credit for any studies during your 12 month suspension from studies.  However, after the 12 months you may take courses at another institution and depending on the courses taken and your performance (grades) the courses may be credited to your program.   You are strongly advised to discuss this option with a program advisor prior to enrolling in any classes.

What will my standing be once I resume my studies?

You will resume your studies on Probation.

How will being on Probation impact my studies?

As a student on Probation you are required to meet with a program advisor who will assist you in selecting the courses you must take.  You will be required to sign a Probationary Contract that outlines any courses and recommended support services, for example attendance at Time Management or other study skills workshop available through the Learning Success Centre.   While on Probation you must achieve a term grade point average of 2.00 or you will be assigned a Permanent Program Withdrawal standing.  If this happens you will not be allowed to complete your program.

If I am reinstated on Probation will my course load be restricted?

Yes, some programs may reinstate students with a Probationary Contract which may significantly restrict course load. 

If I am successful in completing my Probationary Contract requirements, will I be allowed to continue my studies?

Successful completion of your Probationary Contract will allow you to continue on Probation (or Clear standing if a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher is achieved). 

What if I run into difficulty with my studies while on Probation?

You are strongly encouraged to discuss anything that impacts your studies with your program advisor as soon as is possible.  Depending on the circumstances there may be options available to assist you. 

How do I get off of Probation?

Once your cumulative grade point average (CGPA) reaches 2.00 or higher, your Academic Standing will be Clear.  Learn how your GPA is calculated.

Is there a fast way to achieve a Clear standing?

The quickest way to achieve a Clear standing is to repeat failed courses or courses in which you obtained a D range grade.  When you repeat a course the original grade is replaced by the newer grade when calculating your CGPA. Learn how your GPA is calculated.

What if I do not want to repeat a course I got a D in?

Unless strongly recommended by a program advisor you do not need to repeat such a course.  However, repeating the course will improve your CGPA more so than simply moving on in your program.  Retaking the course will also provide a better knowledge foundation for future courses.  This is particularly true if the course is a prerequisite for other courses.  Learn how your GPA is calculated.

Under the terms of a recent change to Ryerson Senate policy, if you were assigned an RTW standing at the end of the Winter 2011 semester or later, you may be eligible to participate in Fresh Start, part of Ryerson’s student success program . This program is designed to help students who have experienced academic difficulties. The Fresh Start program can assist RTW students in returning to their original program . It can also assist RTW students to explore program transfer options. Please complete the Request for Reinstatement form PDF and the Request for Reinstatement - Supplementary form PDF and submit to your program advisor. The Reinstatement form allows you to indicate your desire to participate in the Fresh Start program and/or to request reinstatement or to transfer programs. In either case, you will be contacted through email by a program advisor once your application has been reviewed.

 

FAQ for students assigned an RTW standing Winter 2011 or later

When may I resume my studies after being assigned a Required to Withdraw academic standing?

Under new policy effective May, 2011, you must have a minimum period of one semester absent from formal study.   You may resume your studies after that semester as a student in the Fresh Start program, part of Ryerson’s Student Success initiative.   For example, if you were assigned an RTW standing at the end of the Winter 2011 term, you may resume your studies at the start of the Fall 2011 term provided that you have applied for and been accepted into the Fresh Start program.

What is the Fresh Start program?

The Fresh Start program is part of Ryerson’s overall support strategy for students in academic jeopardy.  The Fresh Start program is a two-part program designed to assist students in resuming their studies.  In part one, students are required to take the “Fresh Start Strategies,”course.  Additionally, students may take up to two credit courses.  Those courses are to be chosen in conjunction with a student’s program advisor.  In part two, students may take up to four credit courses, again selected after discussion with a program advisor.  Minimum grades may be specified for the credit courses; the Fresh Start Strategies course is grades as a Pass/Fail.

What if I don’t apply to or get accepted into the Fresh Start program?

You may apply for reinstatement, or transfer to another program, during your third term away from formal study.  For example, if you were assigned an RTW standing at the end of the Winter 2011 term, you may request reinstatement to resume your studies at the start of the Spring/Summer term 2012.

How do I let my Program know that I wish to resume my studies or participate in the Fresh Start program?

You must complete and submit the Request for Reinstatement form.

Are there fees associated with the Fresh Start program?

Yes.  Normal tuition fees will be assessed for any credit courses taken.  A fee will also be assessed for the Fresh Start Strategies course.

If I participate in the Fresh Start program will I be eligible for OSAP?

Unfortunately, students in the Fresh Start program are not normally eligible for OSAP or other forms of government/University financial assistance.  However, as each student’s situation is different, students should feel welcome to discuss their situation with a Financial Aid Advisor.

Is my return to studies guaranteed after completing the Fresh Start Program?

Yes!  Students successfully completing the Fresh Start Strategies course and the credit courses may resume studies the term following completion of the Fresh Start Program.  Your program advisor will provide you with the information you need.

What happens if I do not complete all of the Fresh Start courses I am enrolled in?

If you do not fulfil all of the requirements of your Fresh Start / Probationary plan you will need to complete the balance of your RTW period. 

What happens if I fail one or more of the Fresh Start courses I am enrolled in?

If you do not fulfil all of the requirements of your Fresh Start / Probationary plan you will need to complete the balance of your RTW period.

What happens if I fail the Fresh Start Strategies course but pass all of the credit courses I am enrolled in?

You must successfully complete all of the requirements of your Fresh Start / Probationary plan, including passing the Fresh Start Strategies course.  If you not successfully complete all of the requirements, you will need to complete the balance of your RTW period.

Will the Fresh Start Strategies course appear on my official transcript?

No.  Only your credit courses will appear on your official transcript.

What happens if my program department tells me that I cannot resume my studies?
