Curriculum Advising

Letters of Permission

If you are in a Ryerson degree or certificate program and wish to take a course at another accredited post-secondary institution for credit towards your Ryerson program, you must get a Letter of Permission (LOP) to study elsewhere. The institution you plan to attend may also require this letter before they will enroll you in courses. The fee for processing a Letter of Permission is $40 per course (subject to change).

The Letter of Permission Application form is available online and at The Office of Enrollment Services and Student Fees. Complete the application form, attach a complete course outline of the course you wish to take, and submit with the fee payment to Enrollment Services. (POD-64)

If the course is approved, a letter stating that you have permission to enroll in the course will be mailed to you or, upon request, can be held for you to pick up at Enrollment Services and Student Fees. Processing time is five to ten working days, , if there is an established equivalency on file. Otherwise, you will be required to obtain the necessary signatures in order for Curriculum Advising to process your letter within the time frame specified. If you have already applied and would like an update on the status of your application, please call 416-979-5151 and ask to be connected to the Curriculum Advising Officer for your program or email gradinfo@ryerson.ca. Please have your student ID number ready.

Within 3 months of completing the approved course, you must submit a transfer credit application form along with an official transcript from the host institution to Enrollment Services and Student Fees.

Courses from accredited universities are considered for Transfer Credit when successfully completed with a grade of 60 percent or higher (where 60 percent equals 'C-'). Courses from accredited colleges and institutions of technology may be considered for Transfer Credit when completed with a grade 70 percent or higher (where 70 percent equals 'B-').

Please note:

  • LOP's are not generally available to Direct Entry students.
  • The majority of courses required for Chang School certificate programs are degree level. Therefore, courses requested must also be degree level. This applies to certificate level courses as well.
