Adding a Minor
A Minor is an opportunity for you to explore a secondary area of undergraduate study either for personal interest beyond your degree program, or as an area of specific expertise related to your degree program that will serve the your career choice. A minor consists of six single-term courses with a coherence based upon discipline, theme and/or methodology as determined by the program offering the Minor and approved by Senate.
Approved Minor Options:
You may locate information for available minors in the Undergraduate Academic Calendar under the heading “Minors”.
Your priority should be given to enrollment in, and the completion of, your program’s graduation requirements. You are cautioned that taking courses over and above basic program requirements in order to earn a Minor, may adversely affect overall academic performance and jeopardize Academic Standing. If you are on PROBATIONARY Standing you will not be authorized to take extra courses for the purposes of earning a Minor.
It is the your responsibility to apply for the Minor at the time you apply to graduate (these are two separate procedures on RAMSS. Step by Step instructions are available through RAMSS SUPPORT under Academic – “How to Select a Minor”.
NOTE: You should also be aware, that you are eligible to graduate from the program, regardless of whether you have completed the requirements of the Minor you have applied for, you will still graduate from the program.
Minor Policies:
Students entering first, second, or third year of their program in Fall 2011 will be expected to follow the new Minor Policy below, which enforces the use of a maximum of two Required/Required Group/Professional courses towards the Minors curriculum. Students entering the final year of their studies in Fall 2011 will be grand- parented and may follow the former Minor's policy requirements.
- A Minor consists of six single-term courses with a coherence based upon discipline, theme and/or methodology;
- Where it is possible, a student may take more than one Minor. However, an individual course may only be used to satisfy the requirements of 'one' Minor;
- It is acknowledged that scheduling issues may prevent students from being able to access all of the courses in a specific Minor in the same time frame as they are completing the requirements for their degree;
- A Minor must be completed before graduation;
- Completion of a Minor is noted on the academic transcript, but not on the award document.
Minor Restrictions
- A maximum of two core courses from the student's degree program, (either Required/Required Group/Professional elective) may be applied to a Minor;
- A maximum of two Liberal Studies courses may be applied to a Minor. These two Liberal Studies courses can be used to fulfill both degree requirements and Minor requirements;
- Course substitutions are not permitted in the completion of a Minor;
- Students are eligible to take any Minor except those which are specifically excluded by their program because they are too closely related to the core program requirements (e.g., a Business Management - Accounting Major student is not eligible to earn an Accounting Minor);
