Visual Schedule Builder (VSB) is an online self-service tool that enables undergraduate students to effectively and effortlessly create their optimal class schedule.
VSB allows undergraduate students to:
- Filter and search for courses
- Drag and drop classes into your schedule
- Search around classes you ‘pin’ as preferred
- Block timeslots to accommodate part-time jobs, and other personal commitments
- Create multiple variations of schedules to choose from
- Select their favourite schedule

You will still be required to select courses that fulfill the curriculum requirements for your degree. Before you begin your course selection, please ensure that you have viewed your Advisement Report and that you are selecting courses that are part of the curriculum requirements to complete your program of study.

What is the Visual Schedule Builder (VSB)?
VSB is an intuitive and simple way to create your class schedule based on personal and academic needs.
Who can use VSB?
All undergraduate program students creating an undergraduate class schedule may use this functionality. At this time, VSB is a Pilot Project, available only to undergraduate students.
How do I access VSB?
A link to VSB can be found in your Student Center when you log into RAMSS.
How do I use VSB?
Please see the step-by-step instructions for VSB on the How? tab. A video tutorial is also available when you select the VSB link in RAMSS.
When can I use VSB?
With the exception of Reoccurring Maintenance and Scheduled Maintenance for RAMSS, students can access VSB during the enrolment period for each semester. The CCS Scheduled Maintenance and Outages page can be found on: http://www.ryerson.ca/ccs/schedule.html.
Can I save the schedules generated by VSB so that I can refer to them later?
Yes, VSB has an 'Add to Favorites' function that can save your favourite schedules.
Are all Ryerson courses listed in the VSB?
Undergraduate students can enrol, drop and swap Undergraduate classes in VSB. Continuing Education classes can be viewed in your VSB schedule if you have already enrolled through RAMSS.
Can I enrol/drop my classes from the VSB?
Yes, you can enrol/drop classes directly from the VSB and this will be immediately and automatically reflected in your RAMSS schedule. Chang School of Continuing Education class enrolments/drops/swaps must still be completed through RAMSS. Please be sure to review the enrol/drop actions in VSB before completing the transaction.
Will the VSB allow me to enrol or swap a class that I am not eligible for?
You are responsible for ensuring that you are eligible for any course that you are enrolling/swapping into. You will not be able to enrol or swap into a class if you do not have the prerequisites or meet other eligibility requirements.
If I save a class schedule in VSB using 'Add to Favourites', will that reserve a seat for me in those classes?
Saving a favourite class schedule in VSB will not reserve your seat in any of the classes. ‘Add to Favourites’ allows you to refer back to your favourite class schedules and check the availability of those classes without having to start from scratch. You are strongly encouraged to complete your enrolments as soon as possible, as enrolment into classes is on a first-come, first-served basis and a class that was available when you were creating your schedule in VSB might be full by the time you are ready to enrol.
If I choose 'Add to Cart' in VSB, will that reserve a seat for me in those classes?
Selecting 'Add to Cart' in VSB will not reserve your seat in any of the classes, but will only add the classes to your shopping cart for you to enrol at a later time. You are strongly encouraged to complete your enrolments as soon as possible, as enrolment into classes is on a first-come, first-served basis and a class that was available when you were creating your schedule in VSB might be full by the time you are ready to enrol.
Can I see on VSB if there are waitlist spaces available in a course that is listed as full?
Yes, before completing an enrolment, VSB will display a message indicating whether a class has a wait list option.
How do I block off time slots in my schedule?
Click and drag the times that you would like to block from your class schedule. The time slot will become grey to show you are busy.
How do I remove the blocked-off time slots from my schedule?
Simply click on the grey area for the time slot you no longer want to block and it will be removed.
VSB allows me to add custom time blocks to my potential schedules but I’m still getting results that schedule classes during my blocked-off time. Why did VSB allow me to schedule them?
VSB will display all possible schedule options for you to choose from, enabling you to make the final decision of your schedule.
I’m a student with only one elective this term – the rest of my program is already planned out for me. Would I still want to use VSB?
Even if you have only a single course to choose, VSB may offer you multiple weekly class schedules to help guide your decision on which class to take.
Can I use VSB to search for classes taught by a specific instructor?
Yes. In the 'Select Course' field you are able to select courses taught by a specific instructor by entering the instructors First Name and Last Name.
When I add courses to VSB and try to view the potential schedules, there are no results. How can this be possible?
This may be possible if there is a time conflict between the courses you added.
How can I determine the date and time of a class?
After searching a course through the Add Courses section, the data and time of the classes will appear on the calendar under the Results section.
How can I determine the location of a class?
After searching a course through the Add Courses section, the location of the class appears in the Results section under each respective class.
How can I determine which instructor is teaching a class?
The instructor for each class appears in the Results section under each respective class.
Can VSB be used for course intentions?
The VSB is a scheduling tool and cannot be used for Course intention selections because Course Intentions are placeholders used for planning purposes and do not yet have scheduled date or time.
How can I search for a class during a time that I already have a class enrolled?
Unpin the enrolled class, and search for the desired course. The results section will display alternative schedule options.
What does it mean to ‘pin’ a class?
In VSB, when a class is pinned, it is held in your schedule so that other classes can only be added around the specified class. For example, if you have pinned a class on Mondays from 12pm-3pm, any new class searches will not appear on the Monday 12pm-3pm slot.
What does it mean when a class is unpinned?
When a class is unpinned, this may provide more possible schedule results to display searched classes during the day and time of the unpinned class.
How can I unpin a class?
Click on the red pushpin icon of the respective class and this will unpin from your schedule.
How can I add a class that is currently full to my VSB schedule?
If an undergraduate class has a waitlist option with available waitlist seats, you may add yourself to the waitlist.
For more information about waitlist classes, please refer to:
How often does VSB refresh the class information?
The class information on the VSB tool refreshes every 30 seconds or less.
Can I print my schedule from VSB?
To print your schedule from VSB, please click the ‘Print Schedule’ link in the top left corner of the Results section.
What if VSB generated too many schedule results?
If you come up with too many schedule possibilities while selecting courses, we recommend reducing the number of enabled classes or pin some classes before adding more courses.
How can I filter the schedule results?
To narrow down the results based on your preferences, there are filters at the top right corner of the VSB Results section. There are options to filter by full classes, online classes and on-campus classes.
How can I sort the schedule results?
To organize your generated results, there are sort preferences at the top right corner of the VSB Results section.
The sort preference options are as follows:
- Most days off
- Morning classes
- Mid-day classes
- Evening classes
- Time off campus
- Most on-campus
If a sort preference is selected, it may change the sequence of Generated Results shown, to display the preference at the beginning of the list.
