How much of the salary costs does the program cover?
$10.00 of the hourly pay rate + benefits will be funded by the Ontario Work Study Program (OWSP) or university funding. The remaining costs will come from the hiring department/school.
How is the hourly rate of pay calculated?
The hourly wage rate is dependent on the position duties, required work skills, experience and is within the hourly range as set by Human Resources. An employer can increase a student employee's hourly rate above work study maximum range, but the additional cost is covered by the employer and not the program.
How many Work-Study/research assistant jobs can a student have each academic year?
Only one work-study or research assistant position can be held by a student during the duration of the program.
Can I switch jobs if another job that I applied for becomes available?
Students can apply for as many jobs as they wish, however must carefully pick a job before accepting a job offer and being hired. Once hired, the student is expected to complete the job assignment. If a student considers any subsequent offers they may not be eligible for work-study funding if it appears they are job hopping. On case by case basis students planning to move from one work study position to another will be required to provide an explanation for the move and agreement from their current work study employers.
What types of jobs are considered for the Experiential Work Study program?
Jobs will provide:
- Experiential learning opportunities and academically relevant experience
- Development /enhancement of specific soft skills
Does a work study/research assistant approval guarantee a job?
No - Work Study approval grants the student access to view and apply to the positions available on the Career Development and Employment Centre web site, but this does not guarantee that all students will be hired.
What about students who were on coop/exchange in Fall an/or Winter?
Students who were on co-op in the Fall/Winter are ineligible for summer work study because program fees paid were below program fee threshold of $5134.
Students who were on exchange in the Fall/Winter may be eligible for summer work if all work study requirements are met.
