2013 Spring/Summer OSAP Application Process – Full Time Students

DO NOT complete another full-time OSAP web application for the Spring/Summer terms if you have already submitted an application and received funding for the Fall/Winter term.

·         In order to apply you MUST take a minimum of 3 billing units within the term you are applying for (2 billable units if you are a student with permanent disability).

·         Courses that you complete in 1 week (Intensive) are not OSAP eligible.

·         Repeated Courses:  You will be eligible for OSAP funding for only courses that you have received an “F” grade in previously.

·         Appeals that were available for Fall/Winter term may be available for the Spring/Summer terms   Please refer to this website for further details.

·         If you are enrolled in 1 OR 2 courses, you are considered part-time and can apply using the OSAP Part-Time application.

·         If you are a Ryerson student taking courses at both Ryerson and another institution on a Letter of Permission for the Spring/Summer session, you must pick up a Studies at Another Institution Form.  You must complete Section A and have the Financial Aid Office representative at the institution you will be attending complete and sign Section B.  Both the Studies at Another Institution and the Extension forms must be submitted to our office by the deadline for processing.  If you are taking all courses at another institution on a Letter of Permission, you must apply for OSAP through the other institution.  The Studies at Another Institution form for Ryerson Students is located at,  (http://www.ryerson.ca/currentstudents/financialaid/ )

REPEATING COURSES

OSAP will not provide funding for courses that you are taking to improve your GPA.  Any grade, other than an “F” is considered a passing grade.

However, if your program department has deemed it mandatory to retake a class to obtain a higher grade, OSAP may consider funding the subject again.  In order to comply with OSAP regulations, you are required to provide a confirmation letter from your program department.  This letter must specify which subject must be repeated, the previous mark received, and the reason for the request to retake the course.

MAINTAINING ACADEMIC PROGRESSION

The following are OSAP rules and the university cannot waive or set them aside.

To remain eligible for Full-Time OSAP funding, you are required to maintain a Full-Time course load and satisfactory academic progression throughout your studies.  Not maintaining satisfactory academic progress will result in being placed on Academic Probation (first occurrence) or on Academic Restrictions (subsequent occurrences).  To regain access to OSAP funding in a future term, a student will have to provide written evidence of improvement and academic plans.  Students should be aware that this process can take several weeks to resolve and future funding could be delayed.

LOAN OVERPAYMENTS

Students who received OSAP funding for the Fall and Winter terms (or Winter 2012 only), and had their files reassessed (course load changes, dropping courses, changes to income, etc.) may have encountered a Loan (or Grant) Overpayment.

If you then choose to extend your OSAP to include the Spring, Summer, or Spring/Summer terms, the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities will reduce your Spring, Summer, or Spring/Summer funding by any Overpayments.

ie. You received $5000.00 in OSAP funding for the Fall and Winter terms.  You picked up your funding in September and January.  You then dropped one course in February 2012.  As a result, your OSAP was reassessed to $4350.00.  This would leave a Loan Overpayment of $650.00 on your OSAP account.  If you then submit a Spring/Summer Extension form, and are assessed $1500.00 for the Spring/Summer term, your Spring/Summer OSAP Entitlement will be reduced by your Overpayment.  ($1500 - 650=$850.00)  Therefore, you may not have enough funding to cover your Spring/Summer educational expenses.

ONTARIO STUDENT OPPORTUNITY GRANT (OSOG)

The OSOG was implemented to assist students to reduce their student loan debts.  Students must complete their year of study and pass the income verification (Ministry verifies income with the Canada Revenue Agency) for each year of study.

The following chart outlines the minimum thresholds for 2 and 3 terms of study.

file

NOTE:

If you have extended your Fall and Winter OSAP application to include the Spring, Summer, or Spring/Summer terms, you will be considered for the Ontario Student Opportunity Grant (OSOG).

INCOME

Any changes to the income reported on your application must be updated with the Student Financial Assistance office via the Income Change form.

NOTIFICATION OF AVAILABLE FUNDING

Once your Spring, Summer, or Spring/Summer application has been processed, you will receive an email notification in your Ryerson email account with the details of your application status.

You will be notified if further requirements must be met, if your application has been approved, and if you have been assessed with $0 funding.

PLEASE NOTE:

It is possible through no fault of your own or the university’s that OSAP funds intended to pay tuition fees are not received by Ryerson and are instead, deposited into your bank account.  In the event that this happens, it is your responsibility to pay your outstanding tuition fees directly to Ryerson through the Student Fees office.

OTHER FORMS

Continuation of Interest-Free Status

The Continuation of Interest-Free Status (CIFS) form is used for students who are still enrolled in Full-Time studies, but are not receiving OSAP funding for this academic year.  This includes students who applied for OSAP, but were ineligible to receive any funding as well as students who chose not to apply for OSAP funding.

Students on an approved Exchange, CO-OP, or Internship program, who are not receiving OSAP funding are also entitled to apply for CIFS.

Letter of Permission & Studies at Another Institution

A Letter of Permission is required when a student will be completing some courses that will go towards their current degree at another institution.  (Please note that your program department must approve this request prior to applying for OSAP funding).

Once a Letter of Permission has been obtained, you must pick up a Studies at Another Institution form from the SFA office (located at POD 59).  Section A of the SAI form must be filled out by an SFA Advisor at Ryerson’s Student Financial Assistance office.  The SAI form must then be taken to the Financial Aid office at the other institution, where Section B must be completed.

Once both Sections A and B have been filled out correctly, the student must then return the SAI form to the Ryerson SFA office for processing.
