Transfer Credits

Applications from newly admitted students for the Fall 2012 Term will be accepted starting in May 2012.  Please refer to Transfer Credit Application Deadlines for more information.

How to Apply for Transfer Credits

Students have the option of applying for Transfer Credits online or using the paper-based Transfer Credit Application form. Students should read the Transfer Credit Policy and applicable information in the Additional Transfer Credit Information section before applying. Refer to Transfer Credit Application Deadlines for significant dates and late fee information.

Please refer to Transfer Credit Application Deadlines for information
on upcoming deadline dates.

Online Applications

Ryerson undergraduate students who have confirmed their Offer of Admission are eligible to submit online Transfer Credit Applications for courses completed at accredited Ontario colleges and universities and select Canadian universities. Students must submit paper Transfer Credit Application Forms if courses are not available on the online course catalog for these institutions. Complete instructions for applying online are available in the Transfer Credit Job Aid.

The steps to apply online:

  1. Enter the details of the courses you wish to be evaluated for a Transfer Credit on RAMSS. (If you are a new student, you can gain access to RAMSS by activating your online identity.)

  2. Courses entered will be evaluated according to established equivalencies and the results will inform you which courses are equivalent and denied pending validation by the Transfer Credit Unit. It will also reveal which courses we do not have equivalencies ("No Rule") for and must be evaluated by faculty to determine equivalency.

  3. The preferred method for submission of course outlines for ‘No Rule’ applications is to drop them off at Enrollment Services Student Fees , POD-64, or mail course outlines to the Transfer Credit Unit for Transfer Credit evaluation.

    Ryerson University
    Transfer Credit Unit, POD-363
    350 Victoria Street
    Toronto, Ontario M5B 2K3

Clearly label your name and Student ID number on each course outline and indicate it is to accompany a No Rule application; you are not required to complete paper-based Transfer Credit Application forms.

Only submit course outlines for courses that you applied for online. If you wish to make additional applications for an institution you must submit additional Transfer Credit applications using the paper-based method.

  4. The Transfer Credit Unit verifies the online submission within 2 business days and the official results are posted on the Transfer Credit Report on RAMSS.

No Rule applications with an outline status, ‘Submit Course Outline’ indicates we have not received an adequate course outline.

No Rule applications with an outline status, ‘Course Outline Received’ indicates we have received an acceptable course outline and it is currently under faculty review. It may take 6-8 weeks from the time an acceptable course outline in received for a decision to be made.

  5. All final decisions are posted on the Transfer Credit Report on RAMSS. It is the responsibility of the student to review all final decisions. Any outstanding issues must be resolved as soon as possible. For course and scheduling adjustments see step 6.

  6. To determine what Transfer Credits apply toward your program, full-time students should run an Advisement Report on RAMSS and part-time students should request a Manual Advisement Report (see Forms Cabinet). It is the responsibility of the student to adjust their course enrollments and schedule.

Paper-Based Applications

All confirmed Ryerson students can use the paper-based Transfer Credit Application Form to apply for Transfer Credit from any accredited post-secondary institution. Transfer Credit Application Forms (Fillable PDF) are available online and at Enrollment Services and Student Fees , POD-64. Complete instructions are on the back of the form.

The steps to apply using the Transfer Credit Application Form:

  1. Complete one application form and attach a detailed course outline for each course you are using to apply for Transfer Credit.

  2. The preferred method for submitting complete applications is dropping them off at Enrollment Services and Student Fees, POD-64, or mailed to the Transfer Credit Unit.

  3. Applications will be processed within 2 weeks of applying and official results will be available on the Transfer Credit Report on RAMSS.

The status of pending (No Rule) applications for Ontario and select Canadian institutions will appear on the Transfer Credit Report. Pending applications from international and some out-of-province institutions, as well as appeals, will not appear until a final decision has been made.

  4. Courses from Ontario and select Canadian institutions for which there are no equivalencies on file, will show as ‘No Rule’ and must be assessed by faculty.

An outline status, ‘Course Outline Received’ indicates we have received an acceptable course outline. An outline status, ‘Submit Course Outline’ indicates we have not received an adequate course outline. If an acceptable course outline was not received you will be contacted by email outlining the additional information required.

  5. It may take 6-8 weeks from the time an acceptable course outline is received for a decision to be made and they will be posted on the Transfer Credit Report on RAMSS.

Course Outlines

The preferred method for submission of course outlines for ‘No Rule’ applications is to drop them off at Enrollment Services Student Fees , POD-64, or mail course outlines to the Transfer Credit Unit for Transfer Credit evaluation. (It is advisable at this time to use couriers.)

Course outlines must include the course title, course number, course description, objectives, topics covered, textbooks used, assignments and an evaluation scheme. Calendar type course descriptions are not sufficient for determining equivalency to a Ryerson credit and will not be accepted.

For Liberal Studies and arts courses the outline must include detailed information on assignments and essays, including word count and percentage of course grade. Refer to Liberal Studies Transfer Credit Requirements for more information.

Course outlines must be in English.

If the original material is not in English, a certified translation of the course outline is required in addition to the official outline in the original language. Acceptable translators include a notary public or a certified translating service. Exception: Uncertified translations of French course outlines will be accepted. Outlines for which students are seeking a French language credit (e.g. FRE 101, FRE 201) do not need to be translated.

In cases where you no longer have a copy of the course outline, you should contact your previous school, program department or professor and request a copy.

Current course outlines will be accepted as long as the course title or course number has not changed. If the course title or course number on the outline differs from your transcript, a written note from the professor must be submitted that confirms the course content is identical. If the content has changed, a summary of the differences must be provided by the professor.

Students are encouraged to keep a copy of all course/teaching outlines for their records as they are destroyed once a Transfer Credit decision has been made.

Incomplete Applications

Students will be emailed to their Ryerson account if their Transfer Credit Application is incomplete and additional information must be submitted before processing can continue. (Students submitting online applications will not be contacted if course outlines are required; the outline status is available on the Transfer Credit Report on RAMSS.)

Official transcripts must be included with applications if they were not previously submitted to Ryerson. Official transcripts must be issued from your previous institution in a sealed envelope.

Students with outstanding applications on the Transfer Credit Report on RAMSS with an outline status of ‘submit course outline’, must submit detailed course outlines clearly labeled with their name and student ID as soon as possible.

If the outline has not been received by the Transfer Credit office after six weeks from the date the Transfer Credit Unit commenced processing the application, the courses will be removed from the Transfer Credit Report on RAMSS and they will not be considered for Transfer Credit.

If students would still like to have the courses evaluated for Transfer Credits after this six week period has elapsed, they may submit the course outline to Enrollment Services and Student Fees at POD-64.

An incomplete application form will be kept by the Transfer Credit Unit for one year from the date of the incomplete notification. If no additional information is received within this time period the application form and any other supporting documentation will be destroyed. If a student would like to pursue an outstanding decision they must re-apply using a paper-based Transfer Credit Application Form (see Forms Cabinet).
