Transfer Credits

Next Steps

yellow divider   Your official application results will be posted on your Transfer Credit Report. While the Transfer Credits on your Report will reflect faculty approved equivalents, they may not all be relevant to your program curriculum. Your next steps include understanding your Transfer Credit Report and determining how granted Transfer Credits apply towards your program.

Step One

Review Transfer Credit Report

Your Transfer Credit Report will provide results on all of your Transfer Credit applications including pending applications, denied and granted Credits.  Frequently review this Report until all of your application decisions are final.

It is your responsibility to adjust your course schedule immediately after receiving granted Transfer Credits.  For options on course planning and schedule adjustments contact your program advisor.

You can view your Transfer Credit Report by accessing the RAMSS tab of my.ryerson.ca. Instructions on how to view your Transfer Credit Report are available on RAMSS Support. The Course Credits section of the Report is where equivalent Ryerson courses are posted as credits.  The Comments section may include relevant comments on your applications, including denied reasons.

Generic Liberal Studies and Professional Credits

Typically when making decisions faculty attempt to grant specific Ryerson credits however when a specific Ryerson course cannot be established generic credits are issued.  Visit Eligible Transfer Credits on how our faculty evaluators determine Transfer Credit equivalencies.

When specific Liberal Studies courses such as PSY 105 and SOC 103 cannot be granted, generic Liberal Studies are granted for example GEN LLS, SOC LL2, PSY ULS and SOC UL2.

The first 3 letters of the credit represent the subject area. For example:

  • GEN – General Subject Area
  • SOC – Sociology
  • PSY – Psychology

The course number indicates the level and unit value of the credit. For example:

  • LLS - Lower Level Liberal Studies (Table A)
  • LL2 - 2 Lower Level Liberal Studies (Table A)
  • ULS - Upper Level Liberal Studies (Table B)
  • UL2 - 2 Upper Level Liberal Studies (Table B)

Occasionally when your previous courses do not meet Liberal Studies requirements they can be considered for Professional or Professionally-Related credits.  Generic credits such as ECN GEN, PSY GEN, PRE GEN are granted when your courses do not match specific Ryerson courses.

The first 3 letters of the credit represent the subject area. For example:

  • SOC – Sociology
  • PSY – Psychology
  • PRE – General Professionally-Related Subject Area

PRE GEN credits are generally granted for subject areas not listed in the Professionally-Related Table or for subjects not offered at Ryerson.

Step Two

Run Advisement Report

The Advisement Report is available to full-time students admitted for the Fall Term starting in August on the RAMSS tab of my.ryerson.ca.  View instructions now

This Report determines how granted Transfer Credits fulfill your program's graduation requirements. The Non-Applicable Courses and Credits section of the Report identifies Credits that do not apply towards your program. Go to Step 3 on how to apply Non-Applicable Credits.

If you are a part-time student and/or the Advisement Report is unavailable, you can confirm which Credits are applying towards your program requirements by referring to your program information in the Undergraduate Calendar.

Direct Advisement Report questions to your program advisor.

Step Three

Follow up (if necessary)

After you have identified Non-Applicable Credits, you will need to understand why they are unused to determine the best follow up approach.

Common reasons for Non-Applicable Credits and follow up action are:

  • Too many Liberal Studies Credits were granted Action

If you can identify an equivalent Required Course or a Professional or Professionally-Related course in your program submit a Transfer Credit Appeal.
    OR
If courses with similar subject areas are listed in your Professional or Professionally-Related tables, request approval from your program department to have credits directed toward these requirements.  Please note:  Lower Level (Table A) Liberal Studies Credits cannot be directed/substituted for Upper Level (Table B) Credits.

  • The Liberal Studies Credit is restricted for your program Action

Review the Liberal Studies restrictions tables for your program in the Undergraduate Calendar for a list.
    Transfer Credit Appeal.

  • Generic Credits are in the Non-Applicable Course and Credits section of the Advisement Report Action

Request approval from your program department to direct credits towards your Professional or Professionally-Related tables.  Please note: Generic Credits cannot be directed toward Liberal Studies requirements as they are ineligible.

  • The Credits granted do not apply toward your program requirements Action

Not all Credits will apply toward your program requirements.  This is common for programs with different majors and streams.
Contact your program department to determine if Non-Applicable credits can be directed toward your Professional or Professionally-Related tables.
    OR
If you believe your Credit should have been evaluated for equivalency to another course, follow up with a Transfer Credit Appeal.

Your program advisor will be able to inform you on how to follow up with your Transfer Credits.  It is important you attend your program orientation and contact your advisor early; outstanding issues must be cleared up as soon as possible.

For information on appeals view Transfer Credit Appeals.
