Program Orientation
All incoming (full- and part-time) ECS students should make every effort to attend. Orientation materials will not be distributed after the session.

To view and sign up for scheduled event visit ISS Orientation or enquire in person at POD65A (350 Victoria Street) Program of StudyA Program of Study (POS) is a requirement of all graduate students studying at Ryerson. In consultation with the student, the faculty advisor/supervisor will recommend an initial Program of Study and the student will submit this to the Program Office for approval by the Program Director normally within the first four weeks of study in the program. Any subsequent revisions to the student's POS is agreed upon in writing between the student and faculty advisor/or supervisor; and approved of by the Program Director.It is the student's responsibility to ensure that a current POS has been approved of and a copy submitted to Program Office as course enrollment cannot be formalized without a Program of Study. INSTRUCTIONS: contact your faculty advisor to arrange a meeting to complete an initial Program of Study. For Fall 2011 admissions, your POS form is due no later than Friday, October 7th. Course Selection & RegistrationThe enrolment of students in graduate courses is by the Program Office each term. Students cannot self-enroll online. For exact dates and deadlines related to term enrolment activities, refer to the 'Yeates School of Graduate Studies Significant Dates'. Graduate course selection is based on the student's Program of Study as established with a Faculty Advisor. Additional approval is required for courses not indicated on the student's program of study or the ECS curriculum. INSTRUCTIONS: complete and return a Fall 2011 Course Action Request to the program office on or before Monday, September 12. The Program Office will confirm receipt. While every effort is made to accommodate ECS students, enrolment in graduate courses is subject to class size and space. Elective courses fill up quickly and may also be available to non-ECS Ryerson graduate students. If your RAMSS account is activated, you can confirm term enrolment and course details, and access your timetable online. Graduate/Teaching and Research Assistantships (GA/TA/RA)Graduate students may apply for any GA, TA, or RA positions they qualify for once they have been matriculated and activated as Ryerson graduate students. Graduate/Teaching Assistant refers to a student hired to assist the faculty member by carrying out tasks associated with the faculty member’s teaching activities. GAs and TAs are represented by a collective agreement, namely by CUPE, Local 3904, Unit 3 Research Assistant refers to a student hired to assist the faculty member by carrying out tasks associated with the faculty member’s research and/or scholarly activities. In respect of their employment relationship, Research Assistants are represented by a collective agreement, namely by OPSEU, Local 596 during the fall and winter semesters. University-wide GA, TA and RA opportunities are posted to Ryerson's 'Careers and Jobs' web page at www.ryerson.ca/jobs. Interested applicants must apply online. When available GA, TA and RA positions will be posted by the School of Early Childhood Education, Faculty of Community Services (not by ECS, Yeates School of Graduate Studies). The number of positions will vary from year to year and is determined by undergraduate class size and enrolment. The School of ECE anticipates the posting of positions during weeks 1 and 2 of September and as needed throughout the academic year. Both the offices of ECE and ECS are in communication and will notify ECS students of any postings to the 'Careers and Jobs' page. To maintain, full-time student status at Ryerson, a full-time graduate student may not be employed more than 10 hours per week per semester. Graduate Studies Significant Dates, Policies and ProceduresGraduate students are responsible for knowing key dates, policies and procedures. Take some time to review the schedules and documents posted or referenced on the Yeates School of Graduate Studies (YSGS) website. In particular, familiarize yourself with the Graduate Admissions and Studies Policies (Ryerson University Senate Policy#142). Further YSGS graduate policies and procedures can be found online at: www.ryerson.ca/graduate/policies/ Schedules of significant academic dates for Fall 2011, Winter 2012 and Spring/Summer 2012 terms are published by the Yeates School of Graduate Studies (YSGS) and available online for reference or download at: www.ryerson.ca/graduate/dates/ For the Fall and Winter terms, the ECS Program follow the YSGS schedule of one 12-week session per term. The Spring/Summer term is considered ONE academic term but is divided into two 6-week sessions per term (Spring = Session 1 and Summer = Session 2). Activate your Ryerson Online IdentityTo access many of Ryerson's online resources, you must first activate your Ryerson online identity. During the activation process, you will obtain a username and create your initial password. Once activated, your Ryerson online identity provides you with access to:
NOTE: every Ryerson student must activate a Ryerson Matrix e-mail account. Your Ryerson e-mail address is the official means of receiving university and program communications. The matriculation of incoming students will begin early August. Matriculation is required before the activation of a Ryerson Online Identity. Students should activate their Ryerson e-mail account no later than the end of the first week of classes in the Fall term. To activate your online identity and accounts go to: www.ryerson.ca/ccs/
The OneCard is the official identification card for the Ryerson University community. As well as being the single most important piece of ID you possess during your time here at Ryerson it also serves as a convenience card for many of the services available on campus, including the library, printing and photocopying, food purchases, discounts, savings and more. For details on getting your OneCard go to: www.ryerson.ca/onecard/ The OneCard office will be accepting and processing new student applications beginning August 30. New, incoming graduate students have until August 16th to apply online. A OneCard cannot be processed until the student has been matriculated. Matriculation of incoming students will begin early August. Note: returning Ryerson Students only; your OneCard will be activated on enrolment in one or more class. Graduate Student Workspace and LoungeA Graduate Students' Workspace and Lounge is located at 111 Gerrard Street East (GER/Research and Graduate Studies). All graduate students have access to the west side of 111 Gerrard Street East. The facility is locked at all times and access is via OneCard. Validation stickers are no longer issued to new/returning students. Access is now coded on your OneCard. As well, the ECS Graduate Lounge is located in KHW 358 in the School of Early Childhood Education. The lounge is locked at all times and access is via OneCard.
