Urawa University, Saitama, Japan, faculty and students visit Ryerson School of Early Childhood Studies

On March 19-21, 2013, Urawa University, Saitama, Japan, faculty, family resource centre staff, and students visited Ryerson School of Early Childhood Studies.

The visitors first enjoyed learning about the School of Early Childhood Studies' Early Learning Centre Lab School. A teacher-preceptor from the ELC provided an educational tour of the Centre (below).

Tuesday, March 19, continued in the School of ECS Undergraduate Student Lounge (below) where ECS students hosted a welcome luncheon, an opportunity for many interesting conversations. 

The Urawa students shared the wonders of creating origami with the ECS students (below).

The busy day concluded with a visit to Ryerson's EDGE (Experiential Design and Gaming Environment) Lab, a multi-disciplinary research lab devoted to the study of learning, play and social innovation including the Adaptive Design Studio, a production place for customized, affordable adaptations and communications tools for children with disabilities.  A presentation was provided by Professor Jason Nolan, director of the EDGE Lab (below).

On Wednesday, March 20, the group visited the Holland-Bloorview's Bloorview School, (below), an educational facility that provides innovative school programs to children and youth with special needs.

Visitng The Osborne Collection of Early Children's Books.  The Library's collections span literary classics to popular culture, including novelties like movables and miniatures (below).

The visit concluded, on Thursday, March 21, with a trip to KidsSpark at the Ontario Science Centre (below), a field education placement site for ECS students.

ECS student hosts for the events were Gustav Berg and Queenie Cheung.  Gustav completed an interational placement at Urawa University, visiting approximately 10 different childcare facilities including  POKKE, the family resource centre, during his placement.  He also joined the Ryerson contingent during their visit to Urawa in 2012.  Queenie, as Vice-President of the ECS Course Union, represented the School of Early Childhood Studies.
