Dr. Smith holds a BA in English from the University of Texas at Austin, an MA in Poetics from the New College of California, and a 2010 PhD in English from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Smith is a specialist in Rhetoric and Public Culture and, more broadly, rhetoric theory and history. His dissertation is forthcoming as the scholarly monograph Poets Beyond the Barricade: Rhetoric, Citizenship and Dissent after 1960 (University of Alabama Press, 2012). He has contributed extensively to the culture of contemporary poetry through participation in scholarly and creative events and publications, including an appearance in The Best American Poetry 2002.
