BACHELOR OF ARTS - ENGLISH
Students in the BA in English explore literary and cultural works across a variety of media, genre, cultures, and historical periods. Students develop critical thinking, communication, research and marketable career skills while engaging in the rich, cultural milieu of one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world.
The BA in English consists of 20 English courses (8 required courses and 12 English electives) and 20 other electives (Professionally-Related and Liberal Studies) over four years in the program. In the first year, students gain a broad, interdisciplinary base of knowledge, skills, and methodologies while establishing the basis for study in the English discipline by sharing a common first year with other programs in the Faculty of Arts.
Beginning in the second year, students select English electives from Table II to develop breadth of literary knowledge and skills. Over the course of their studies, students foster the development of career skills in their practicum coursework and showcase their learning in the capstone seminar.
Students also have the opportunity to Study Abroad in the Winter Term of their third year.
For more information on the progression through our curriculum, see Curriculum and Courses.
Newly approved for Fall 2016, BA English students can develop a secondary area of study by opting to pursue a Double Major with either History or Philosophy. The Double Major consists of 13 required and elective English courses, plus an additional 13 required and elective courses in the second subject major. Please contact the Program Admininstrator for more information.
A Minor is a concentration of six required and elective courses in a discipline outside of English. Students complete a Minor by selecting courses that fulfil both the requirements of the Minor and/or of the Liberal Studies (Tables A and B), and/or Professionally-Related (Tables I, III, and IV) program requirements. BA English students may pursue any of the 40+ Minors offered by Ryerson (with exceptions). Please refer to the Minors policy section of the calendar for further information on individual Minor requirements and restrictions.
Note: If specific courses required to complete an approved Minor are not listed in the English Professionally-Related tables (Tables III or IV), students should consult with the Program Administrator about the possibility of having such courses counted towards the Table III or IV requirements.
For further questions about the studying English at Ryerson, please contact Dr. Anne-Marie Lee-Loy, Undergraduate Program Director.
