A Message from the Graduate Program Director

Welcome to the English MA in Literatures of Modernity!

We’ve taken full advantage of Ryerson’s central urban location to design a program that complements coursework and research with scholarly and professional opportunities—both in Toronto, and further afield. Our innovative courses investigate aspects of modernity in literature from cultural, historical, and global perspectives. Students can pursue a major research paper, complete a practicum placement at a literary or cultural institution, and acquire experience as a teaching or research assistant.

Our students have participated in the Dickens Universe in Santa Cruz, California; the Digital Humanities Summer Institute in Victoria, BC; and the Iceland Writers Retreat in Reykjavik. Through involvement in our internationally recognized creative-writing journal, the White Wall Review, students have gained editorial and publishing experience and taken part in launch parties, readings, and the annual Word on the Street festival. Because of our location, our program can offer opportunities for practicum placements with organizations such as Anansi, Book Thug, Broken Pencil, Harbourfront, PEN, Penguin, and TIFF, to name but a few.

Enjoy exploring our website and the program’s many scholarly, creative, and professional opportunities. And if you wish to discuss further what our MA has been able to offer, please feel free to contact me.
