Daniel Maluka

Bachelor of Arts - English (4th year)

Favourite class/professor with the biggest impact?

My favourite class so far has been ENG 400 Literary and Cultural Theory. The instructor that had the biggest impact on me was Professor Tschofen. I really liked the creative freedom she allowed on assignments and how she would always challenge you to do better.

Favourite book?

Cockroach by Rawi Hage.

What was your winning submission?

I won the creative writing award for a set of poems in ENG 306. It was a small workshop class where your work would be critiqued by your classmates. The subjects of the poems really ranged.

What do you enjoy about writing the most?

The thing I enjoy the most about writing is the freedom. You don’t have rules or restrictions and the possibilities of where you can take your reader are endless. I draw as well and I’ve noticed that drawing can be limiting. If you don’t have the technical skills, it’s harder to replicate what you’re picturing on the page. Writing is a much more direct method of getting something across.

Do you have any plans for after graduation?

After graduation I’m definitely taking a year off. With all this school a break will do me some good. Once my year of recovery is over, I’ll most likely go and get my masters.
