The 4th Annual Viola Desmond Day Awards

4th Annual Viola Desmond Day Awards Poster

In 1946, Viola Desmond, a Halifax-born beautician and business woman, stood up for her rights when she refused to move from her seat in a whites-only section of a movie theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. To honour her strength and courage, along with the countless women and men who followed in her footsteps, Ryerson University holds the Viola Desmond Day Award Ceremony.

This is an annual ceremony organized by Ryerson University's Black History Awareness Committee which awards strong, Black women who have made enormous efforts to advance the Black community in politics, business, science, and any other area in the social world that the Black community is often underrepresented or misrepresented in.

It would truly be a pleasure and an honour to celebrate with you on the evening of March 5th, 2012! *Remember to SAVE THE DATE!!!
