Who We Are
The Black History Awareness Committee is a team of students, staff, and faculty who meet regularly to discuss how to celebrate Black History every day of the year. Through events and initiatives, we promote and educate on the successes and contributions of Black Canadians in various aspects of our social world.
Workshops and Events
Through workshops and events, we promote and celebrate Black History in Canada. Our Largest Annual event, the Viola Desmond Day Awards Ceremony, recognizes the contributions being made by Black women to the growth and empowerment of the Black community. Individual awards are given to deserving Black women, who are members of the Ryerson community, who are staff, faculty, and current students. An additional award (the Viola Desmond Award) is given to a high school student who is considering pursuit of post-secondary education. These awards recognize strong, Black women who have made enormous efforts to advance the community in areas where the Black community is often under-represented, such as business, science, and academia, to name a few.
We also seek to promote and assist in student organized initiatives and events, especially those focused around educating on racialized history.
