4th Annual Viola Desmond Day Awards Ceremony
Every year, the Black History Awareness Committee at Ryerson University takes time in early March to recognize the amazing contributions of outstanding, strong, Black Canadian women here on our campus.
We do this through the Annual Viola Desmond Day Awards Ceremony, now in it's fourth year of celebration. This event is named for the catalyzing efforts made by Ms. Viola Desmond in achieving human rights for Black people in Canada during and following her arrest for being Black in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia in 1946.
At the ceremony, an award is given to a local high school student, a current Ryerson student, a Ryerson staff member, and a Ryerson faculty member. All winners are chosen because they have demonstrated interest and enthusiasm in supporting and promoting the betterment and success of the Black community, both on our campus and in mainstream society. Every year, the awards are named after notable women of Canada's Black history in order to promote the learning of Canadian Black history.
We invite you to join us at 5:30pm in the Snack Stop/ Hub Cafeteria for a unique Gallery Walk featuring prominant people from the past, present, and future of Canada's Black History, with refreshments and music from various Black, Canadian, female artists. The Awards Ceremony will follow at 6:30pm in POD 250.
It would truly be a pleasure and an honour to celebrate with you on the evening of March 5th, 2012!
