The Errol Aspevig Award for Outstanding Academic Leadership is given in honour of the former Provost and Vice President Academic Dr. Errol Aspevig, who personified academic leadership during his distinguished 36 year career at Ryerson. The Errol Aspevig Award is presented to a senior academic administrator who has advanced the mission of Ryerson University through outstanding academic leadership.

Dr. Aspevig joined Ryerson in 1971 as a Philosophy lecturer. From 1981 to 1987, he was Chair of the Department of Philosophy. In 1992, he became Dean of the Faculty of Arts and was appointed Provost and Vice-President, Academic in 2000.

At Dr. Aspevig's farewell ceremony, Dean of Arts Carla Cassidy said "Errol has provided service to the community in the best Ryerson tradition," and warmly referred to Dr. Aspevig as Ryerson's "Philosopher Provost," an allusion to Plato's The Republic. "Know that you have left a remarkable legacy for us and this place."
"What an extraordinary privilege it's been to spend 36 years at Ryerson," said Dr. Aspevig. "Thank you Ryerson for the opportunity of a lifetime."

The Errol Aspevig Award for Outstanding Academic Leadership will be granted to an individual who has advanced the mission of Ryerson University through extraordinary and outstanding academic leadership and who has contributed significantly to the enhancement of academic life at Ryerson and beyond. It may be awarded for service at the Departmental, Faculty, or University level, enhanced by service to the community and profession, where appropriate.

The award will be given every year if the University-wide selection committee is satisfied that there is a meritorious nominee.

The nomination form and completed nomination package must be submitted by Wednesday, October 31, 2012 to Ann Mackay in the Convocation and Awards Office KHS 47. Clearly identify the package as being for the Errol Aspevig Award.

CRITERIA
Recognizes outstanding leadership and academic service to Ryerson University in one or more of the following areas.

  • Extraordinary contributions associated with the office held.
  • Innovative and productive approach contributing to achievement of the Ryerson academic plan.
  • A record of service demonstrating role model leadership reflecting exceptional beneficial impact on the community


NOMINEE ELIGIBILITY

  • Any senior academic leader, including Vice-Provosts, Deans, Associate Deans and the Chief Librarian who has served in any one or any combination of these qualified positions, or
  • Any senior academic leader, including Chairs, Directors, Assistant Chairs, Assistant Directors, and Program Directors, who has served in any one or any combination of these qualified positions.
  • Nominee must hold the office at the time of nomination for at least two years or have been out of the office no more than three years.
  • Nominee may not have previously received this award.


NOMINATOR ELIGIBILITY

Nominator and co-nominators must be current employees of Ryerson University.
Self-nominations are not accepted.

NOMINATION PROCESS AND DEADLINES

  • Nominations open week of September 13, 2012
  • Nominees must agree to be nominated.
  • Nomination submission deadline: Wednesday , October 31, 2012 to Ann Mackay, Convocation and Awards Office, KHS 47; clearly identify the package as being for this award.
  • Selection committee convenes week of November 12, 2012.
  • Ryerson Community announcement to be determined.
  • Official award presentation to be determined.



REQUIRED NOMINATION DOCUMENTATION

A completed nomination / application must include:

  • a nominator’s statement (you are putting forward a persuasive argument), signed by a single nominator, of up to five pages addressing explicitly and directly each of the criteria points, in addition to describing the nominee’s service and accomplishments as an academic administrator and how this leadership and impact contribute to the building of the unit, the University, and the broader community.
  • a nomination form which must be signed by a minimum of four co-nominators;
  • five to eight letters of support from those who are not co-nominators (these should reflect the broadness of the nominees contributions, i.e. students, faculty, co-workers, advisory council members, committee colleagues, internal or external, etc.);
  • a citation, suitable for reading at the Award presentation, of 150 words or less which summarizes why the administrator should receive this award and where possible specifying notable achievements.



ADMINISTRATION
The Convocation and Awards Office will prepare, distribute, collect and process nomination forms on behalf of Senate’s Awards and Ceremonials Committee.

ADJUDICATIONThe Selection Committee will be comprised of members of Awards and Ceremonials Committee (Provost’s designate as Chair; 1 Dean; 1 Chair/Director; 2 faculty members). The committee will evaluate the nominations with all supporting documentation and make a recommendation to the Provost for final approval.
