James Cunningham and Alex Wellington gave a talk on “Media Ethics: Ethical Issues in News Reporting” to Editorial Executives from Chongqing, China, in the Asian Business Management Program, York University. The talk was given at the Town Inn Hotel, Toronto, Ontario, on August 3, 2005.
Fall 2002- On Tuesday October 29, 2002, Alex Wellington was asked to present a "mini course", with translation, on Intellectual Property Law and Policy to a group of judges, lawyers and court officials from Tianjin, China (the fourth largest city in China).
Fall 2002- On Monday October 28, 2002, Alex Wellington was a member of a Panel Discussion on "Copyright in the New Millenium: Shrinking the Public Domain versus Information Privacy", along with Jean Dryden, a consultant, CopyRight!, and Christopher Moore, a writer and member of the board for Access Copyright (formerly Cancopy). The event was organized by the Editors' Association of Canada, and held at the Women's Art Institute.
Fall 2002- Alex Wellington organized a course called "Bioethics in the New Millenium" for the LIFE Institute - Continuing Education program for Seniors. The course consisted of the following guest lectures: October 10: Dr. Duff Waring, Research Associate, Faculty of Law, University of Toronto - Research Ethics in the Past and Today; October 17: Dr. David Checkland, Department of Philosophy, Ryerson University - Mental Competence, Capacity and Consent; October 24: Dr. Lionel Rubinoff, Department of Philosophy, Trent University - Economics, Ecology and Biophilia; October 31: Dr. Ruthanna Dyer, Science and Technology Studies, Atkinson College, York University - Xenotransplantation and Tissue Engineering; November 7: Marleen Van Laethem, Research Ethics Monitor, Health Sciences Research Centre, St. Michael's Hospital - Research Ethics; November 14: Dr. Halla Thorsteindottir, Research Associate, Joint Center for Bioethics, University of Toronto - Genetic Data Banks, The Experience in Iceland with DECode; November 17: Brian Cohen, Medical Lawyer - Genetic Testing and Legal Cases.
Spring 2001- A workshop on intellectual property, organized by Alex Wellington, Department of Philosophy, was held on Friday, March 2, 2001, at Ryerson. Its theme was "Ethical Dilemmas for Researchers: University-Industry Research Relationships - The Case of Dr. Nancy Oliveri". The keynote address was given by Dr. Oliveri, Division of Haematology/Oncology, University of Toronto and Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario. Other speakers included Prof. Arthur Schafer, Director, Centre for Professional and Applied Ethics, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba; Prof. Wesley Cragg, George Gardiner Chair of Business Ethics, Schulich School of Business, York University, Toronto, Ontario; and Prof. Stephen Haller, Laurier Brantford, Wilfrid Laurier University, Brantford, Ontario.
Fall 2000 - A Workshop on "Intellectual Property Issues in the Academic Context", organized by Alex Wellington, Department of Philosophy, was held on Friday November 3, 2000, at Ryerson. The first session consisted of presentations by John Wilkinson and Al Formosa, both of Weir and Foulds, in Toronto, on commercialization of research and plagiarism. The second session consisted of presentations by Paul Jones, from the Canadian Association of University Teachers and Allyson Hudgins, then with the University of Toronto Faculty Association. Their topic was Intellectual Property Issues in Academic Employment.
Spring 2000 - A Workshop on "Intellectual Property and Online Education", organized by Alex Wellington, was held on March 3, 2000. Speakers: Paul Hutton, Account Manager for Ryerson with WebCT, spoke about "The Digital Landscape: Issues and Implications"; Richard Malinski, Continuing Education and Distance Education, Ryerson, spoke about "Online Education: Context and Issues"; Paul Dunphy, then at the Office of Research Services, Ryerson University, provided an overview of "Copyright and Patent Law: What They Are and Their Implications."
