Scholarly Research and Creative Activity

The Faculty of Communication & Design (FCAD) is home to an energetic and dynamic scholarly research and creative community (SRC). Faculty members are recipients of external and internal research grants, and prestigious awards such as Gemini’s, Emmy’s and the Governor General’s Award. FCAD SRC activity is diverse and often multi disciplinary and critically extends the boundaries of communication and design. Faculty are actively involved in projects in such diverse areas as immersive worlds, digital and 3D cinema, audience studies, colour management, fashion technology, code politics, media history, information architecture, experiential design, and global news flows. In addition to disseminating their research through books and academic journals, faculty also present their work on television, at conferences, in public exhibitions, and on the theatrical stage. Through these initiatives over the years, FCAD has substantially increased their SRC profile , both nationally and internationally.

The diversity of FCAD SRC activity is reflected in the research labs, studios, and centres housed in the Faculty.

The FCAD Dean’s Office also has numerous ongoing initiatives to support, enhance and promote our faculty members in their SRC activities, including internal funding opportunities, as well as public lectures and internal academic seminars to encourage scholarly discussion and exchange ideas. The Dean's Lecture Series, a popular series of public lectures inaugurated in 2006, has hosted such visionary, artistic, and public intellectuals as Bruce Mau (Winter ’07), Eleanor Wachtel (Fall ’07), Jason Reitman (Winter '08), Sarah Fulford (Fall '08), Peter C. Newman (Winter '10), and Bob Rushby (Winter '11).

FCAD is also proud to collaborate with a number of extraordinary post-doctoral fellows each year, whose work supports and enhances our faculty.
