FCS Learning and Teaching Chair

Ryerson recently established Faculty Teaching Chairs to provide leadership in promoting teaching excellence. Each Faculty will appoint one Faculty Teaching Chair who will participate in a Leadership Institute sponsored by the Learning and Teaching Office (LTO), will serve on an advisory committee for the LTO, and will chair a Faculty Learning and Teaching Committee composed of representatives from each of the Schools in the Faculty.

In 2010, Elaine Frankel of the School of Early Childhood Education was named FCS’s Faculty Teaching Chair for a three-year term.

FCS L&T Committee Update

Transformative approaches to teaching and learning, including interprofessional education, experiential learning and the new curriculum model, were the focus of this year’s FCS Learning and Teaching committee. The FCS’ Teaching Chair, Elaine Frankel, has worked closely with the faculty, library and student representatives on this committee to enhance learning and teaching. A discussion by members on the Curriculum Renewal Green Paper dealt with issues of access, infrastructure and student support requirements in implementing the new curriculum. Faculty and students are serving on new professional learning communities that concentrate on using arts-based instruction and digital narratives to promote teaching about diversity. Workshops such as Participatory Learning in Large Classes, The Long and Short of It: Writing Effective Test Questions, Creating Your Teaching Philosophy and Curriculum, Climate and Community: The Ryerson Experiential Learning Model were delivered exclusively to FCS faculty members as part of the popular Let’s Talk About Teaching series. Watch for upcoming sessions on aligning course objectives, teaching techniques and assignments. Frankel also consults to new, mid-career and late-career faculty members about teaching, course design and student engagement.

Check-out Blackboard for our Discussion Board under “FCS - The Office of the Dean”. Just click on Discussion Board and join the discussion threads, which are developing under “Let’s Talk About Teaching”.

If you have any ideas for future workshops, courses, or discussions, or would just like to talk about any aspect of learning and teaching, please contact Elaine Frankel: efrankel@ryerson.ca or a committee member.
