Norman Esch Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award - Selection Criteria
The following selection categories are applied to all three award stages. The weighting of various categories is adjusted to reflect the stage of project development. Applicants are expected to address the categories to the best of their ability within the application form.
- Overall Proposal Quality: Proposals will be evaluated based on the ability to adhere to the S.M.A.R.T criteria. Please ensure that your proposal is: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.
- Student Rating: Students will be evaluated based on their skill set and passion.
- Idea Rating: Ideas will be assessed based on the following criteria: a) technical feasibility and merit; b) innovation; c) marketing potential for product or service; d) cost and financing needs; and e) risk mitigation.
- Donor Mandate Alignment: a) relevance to the Canadian economy; and b) demonstration of unmet financial need - please use budget form provided.
- Attachment Quality: Applicants are permitted to submit two attachments (one image of the prototype and one additional relevant information such as market assessment or business plan) that support or convey the strength of the idea/project. Relevant and concise attachments can help bolster the overall score given to the project. If, however, attachments are deemed irrelevant or not concise, they may decrease the overall score.
- Stage Improvement (applies to previous applicants only): Improvement will be evaluated through mentor/advisor feedback and by ability to improve from stage to stage.
- Matching Funding (applies to Stage 3 applicants only): Applicants should explain what efforts have been made to secure matching funds.
