The first Canadian chapter of the Alpha Sigma Mu professional and academic honour society was inaugurated yesterday at Ryerson University.

Founded in 1932 by faculty of the metallurgical department at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology, Alpha Sigma Mu is dedicated to encouraging and recognizing excellence in the field of materials science and engineering. Its members consist of students, alumni and other professionals who have demonstrated exceptional academic and professional accomplishments. The Canadian chapter was established under the leadership of FEAS Dean Dr. Mohamed Lachemi.

Dr. Jack Simon, fellow and past president of Alpha Sigma Mu, led the initiation ceremony and inducted the first four members of the Canadian chapter.

The inductees - PhD students Francesco D’Elia and Abdallah Elsayed, Master’s student Anthony Lombardi and Research Associate at the Centre for Near-net-shape Processing of Materials Dr. Sophie Lun Sin – swore to uphold the constitution of Alpha Sigma Mu and promised to advance the well-being of the profession of materials science and engineering.

Alpha Sigma Mu board directors Rick Blackwell, General Manager of Buehler Canada, and Dr. Ravi Ravindran, Ryerson professor, were also present to oversee the initiation ceremony.
