Civil engineering students place third in Canadian Society of Civil Engineering competition

A team of fourth-year civil engineering students won third place at the 2011 Canadian Society of Civil Engineering (CSCE) Undergraduate Student Competition held in Ottawa from June 14-18.
Civil engineering students Petar Filev, Maryam Kolahdoozan and Fredi Petritaj won the prize based on their fourth year project entitled, "Development of Sustainable Unshrinkable Fill Using Alternative Aggregate Sources". The team's research was also published as a peer-refereed conference paper at the 2nd International Engineering Mechanics and Materials Specialty Conference, also held in Ottawa from June 14-18.
The team's project is part of a comprehensive research project funded by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and co-investigated by Dr. Mohamed Lachemi, Dean of FEAS, and civil engineering professor and associate chair Dr. Medhat Shehata. The research looks at exploring different sources of aggregates, including recycled concrete aggregate, that can be used in unshrinkable fill. The outcomes of this research will help develop new standards for materials used in unshrinkable fill in Ontario.
