Mechanical engineering students win first place in safe design competition

A team of undergraduate mechanical engineering students took the top prize in the 2011 James Ham Safe Design Award competition held by Minerva Canada.

Fourth-year students Husein Amiji, Mohammad Khan, Vikram Sharma and Jon Zorzi earned the top spot and the $3,500 prize for designing an on-board emergency derail, which could be activated by a crew member of a runaway train. Team leader Amiji is a former CN locomotive conductor. The team was supervised by mechanical engineering professor Dr. Vincent Chan.

The James Ham Safe Design Award Competition challenges Canadian engineering students to make an original contribution toward integrating safety into engineering design. James Ham trained as an engineer with a secondary field of study in sociology. His Royal Commission Report on Health and Safety led to the creation of Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act in 1979, and to the adoption of the Internal Responsibility System in Ontario workplaces.

Minerva Canada Safety Management Education is a not-for-profit organization that promotes safety, health and environmental management in post-secondary schools across the country.
