Dean Lachemi is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Jeff Xi as the RIADI Director, beginning July 15, 2011. Dr. Xi brings to the position considerable academic and industrial liaison experience, as well as strong and committed academic leadership.

Dr. Xi is a professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering. He has served as Co-ordinator of the Industrial Internship Program (IIP) since the inauguration of the department in 2003. He has succeeded in attracting a significant number of aerospace companies to the IIP, including top names such as Bombardier Aerospace, Pratt and Whitney Canada, the National Research Council’s Institute for Aerospace Research, and the Canadian Department of National Defense, to name a few.

With respect to RIADI, Dr. Xi has been involved in several student projects related to aircraft assembly with Bombardier, and has also been involved in a student project related to impeller design with Magellan. He also recommended three RIADI projects on automatic riveting to Bombardier, and built them as part of an application for an NSERC Strategic Project.

Dr. Xi has much experience liaising with industry. He has conducted research projects with several top aerospace companies in Canada including Bombardier, Pratt and Whitney Canada, and Messier Dowty, and is currently in the process of defining a project with Goodrich. He was also successful in soliciting financial support from industry to fund student awards for a manufacturing course he teaches. He has served on several external committees, through which he has forged further industry contacts, including the Future Major Platform (FMP) led by the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC).
