Dr. Sri Krishnan receives Sarwan Sahota Distinguished Scholar Award

Dr. Sri Krishnan

Dr. Sri Krishnan of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Associate Dean, Research, Development and Graduate Programs, is the recipient of this year’s Sarwan Sahota Distinguished Scholar Award.

This award is presented annually to a faculty member who has made an outstanding contribution to knowledge or artistic creativity in their area of expertise. The award is made possible through the joint contributions of Sarwan Sahota, a retired professor, and the university.

Dr. Krishnan is an outstanding researcher and holds the prestigious position of Canada Research Chair in Biomedical Signal Analysis. He is the Founder and Director of the Signal Analysis Research (SAR) Group (www.rnet.ryerson.ca/sar) located at Ryerson University. Dr. Krishnan’s research primarily focuses on the development and application of engineering methodologies and tools for better health care systems. His group has developed novel signal and image processing techniques for non-invasive diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of various health ailments such as osteoarthritis, voice disorders, muscle-related illness, cardiovascular problems, neurological disorders, breast cancer, and hearing disorders.

In recognition of the impact of Dr. Krishnan’s research outcomes and leadership activities, Ryerson nominated him in 2007 for Canada’s Top 40 Under 40. Dr. Krishnan’s research and leadership have earned him a number of prestigious awards including the 2007 Young Engineer Achievement Award from Engineers’ Canada - the national organization that regulates the practice of engineering in Canada and licenses more than 160,000 professional engineers in the country - the 2006 New Pioneers Award in Science and Technology awarded to immigrants who have made outstanding contributions to Canadian Society, and the 2005 Research Excellence Award from the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture, and Science. Dr. Krishnan has also received eight Ryerson Merit awards in recognition of his outstanding performances in research, teaching, and administration. He has co-authored six best research papers in major International and National Conferences. His research in non-invasive diagnosis of osteoarthritis was named by New Scientist Magazine in January 2002 as one of the “Frontiers in Emerging Technology” and by the Toronto Star in 2006 as one of “25 Great Ideas from Great Minds”. So far, two Ryerson graduate students under his research supervision have won the prestigious Governor General Gold Medal awards for outstanding research work. Dr. Krishnan’s  contribution to biomedical engineering research and to the training of highly qualified personnel has been an exemplary model for our colleagues to follow. He has been an inspirational role model for many graduate students who are seeking research and academic careers.
