The Quality Assurance Office manages the quality of all undergraduate and graduate programs within the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science. This office oversees the creation and approval of new programs, manages the audit of institutional program review processes, and oversees the audit of engineering programs for accreditation purposes.
In Canada, the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) is responsible for accrediting engineering programs. Every six years, an exhaustive examination of engineering programs and facilities is conducted to determine if the programs deserve accreditation. Graduates of a CEAB-accredited program are permitted to join Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), or its counterparts in other provinces, and to describe themselves as Professional Engineers (P.Eng.) after completion of a work period under the supervision of a licensed engineer, and after passing examinations in law and ethics.
The engineering profession expects of its members competence in engineering and an understanding of the effects of engineering on society. Accredited engineering programs must therefore contain not only adequate mathematics, science, and engineering curriculum content but must also develop students' communication skills, and provide students with an understanding of the environmental, cultural, economic, and social impacts of engineering on society, with the concepts of sustainable development, and with the capacity for life-long learning.
All eight of our engineering programs are accredited. Our newest program - biomedical engineering - is the first and only stand-alone accredited undergraduate biomedical engineering program in English Canada.
In Canada, all provincial architecture associations recommend a degree from an accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit Canadian professional degree programs in architecture, recognizes two types of accredited degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture and the Master of Architecture. A program may be granted a six-year, three-year, or two-year term of accreditation, depending on its degree of conformance with established education standards.
The Ryerson Architecture program has been granted full accreditation by the CACB.
