Applying as a Special Student
Application Procedure
Special Engineering Student status is normally granted for one of three reasons: (1) to allow university graduates to upgrade their skills or knowledge, (2) to allow students who are currently enrolled in programs at other universities to take courses that they cannot access at their home institutions, or (3) to allow international students in recognized joint programs with Ryerson with an opportunity to take courses while studying at Ryerson. Special Engineering Student status is not an entry point into Ryerson programs.
Please note students with Required to Withdraw standing (or equivalent) from any university do not qualify for Special Student status in this Faculty.

Download and complete the
FEAS Special Student Permission Form

as outlined below:
Request approval from the
Associate Chair/Program Director of the specific program department which offers the course(s) you wish to take. You must provide the Associate Chair/Program Director with a written rationale for your request and appropriate documentation, i.e., Letter of Permission from your current post-secondary institution; Letter of Academic Evaluation from a licensing body (i.e., Professional Engineers of Ontario or Association of Ontario Land Surveyors); or a letter from a Graduate Program Director recommending qualifying courses for potential admission to a specific graduate program. You must also provide proof that you have completed and passed the pre-requisite (or equivalent) of the course you wish to access.
- If your request is approved, the Associate Chair/Program Director will sign and date Section B of the Permission Form. The Associate Chair/Program Director will retain a copy of the completed form and accompanying documentation for their records and forward a copy to the Associate Dean. If you have already received a Special Student Offer of Admission from a previous term, you may proceed to visit the program department of the course(s) listed on your permission form during the enrollment period to enroll (see "Enrolling in Courses" below). If you have not already received a Special Student Offer of Admission, proceed with steps 3 and 4 below.
NOTE: Special Students may be denied access to courses if the Associate Dean determines that they have been abusing the system.
- Access the Ryerson Application from the Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment webpage. Read the application instructions and follow the steps for creating an account and completing the application form. Select program choice: “Special Engineering” and program code "SEE". Submit your application electronically as instructed.
- Submit the completed Special Student Permission Form
to Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment, Room POD 144, 350 Victoria Street. Remember to keep a photocopy for yourself - you will need it to enroll in courses.
Enrolling in Courses
An Offer of Admission must be received before a student may request course enrollment. Once you have received your Offer of Admission, visit the program department during the enrollment period to enroll in the approved course(s). The program department will need to see your Special Student Permission Form
signed by the Associate Chair/Program Director before they can enroll you in any courses.
