HOW TO PROGRAM MANAGE FORUM
Heather Roulston American Institute of Architecture Students AIAS FORUM chair 1999/2000 Ryerson Polytechnic University Toronto, ON, Canada Every year, as the AIAS FORUM location changes from city to city, the students that plan the conference also continue to change. Few of them, if any, have real experience in planning a major conference event prior to FORUM. So it is not surprising that when students take on the challenge of FORUM, they do so the hard way - learning by trial and error. By the time the students have learned all of the shortcuts, the event is often over, and they are again replaced by the next year of inexperienced planners. That all ends here. I have created this web site, specifically for future FORUM chairs, as my final contribution of my position as AIAS FORUM chair 1999/2000. This web site will speak of shortcuts learned through experience gained in organizing the AIAS 43rd Annual FORUM in Toronto, Canada in the hopes that those students who earn the chance to host FORUM, will be able to contribute better. Because FORUM chairs are different year to year, so are the methodologies used in planning and implementing the event. This site will not explain word for word how to do everything, it should be used merely as a guide in assisting the FORUM planning strategy. The FORUM chair position promises to be challenging, exciting, and frustrating all at the same time, but it also promises to be very rewarding. Organizing FORUM will test one's ability to communicate, organize, respond to crisis situations, manage people and events. I admire those of you who commit themselves to this challenge. I hope this site helps you set a higher standard for FORUM each year! |
