Overview

One of the primary functions of universities in Canada is to conduct basic and applied research. Tenured and tenure-track faculty members have the academic freedom to determine their research programs autonomously.

The expertise of faculty members in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies spans a broad range of topics, with notable clusters in the following five areas:

  • Retail, marketing, and economic geography
  • Immigration & settlement studies, urban studies
  • Public health, health geography
  • Environmental science/studies/management, sustainability science
  • Spatial analysis, geospatial statistics, geocomputation, and geovisualization

Students in programs offered by the Department benefit from research-active faculty members, either through the translation of research findings into classroom teaching or by directly participating in research projects.
