George Thomas Kapelos FRAIC is an architect and planner, and teaches architecture and planning at Ryerson University.  He is a tenured faculty member at the rank of associate professor in the Department of Architectural Science.  Since 2005 he has been a Visiting Professor at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture at the University of Toronto.  A native of London Ontario, he received a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University (magna cum laude), a Master of City Planning from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and a Master of Architecture from Yale, where he was a CMHC scholar.

Since 2000 he has taught in studio and lecture courses in areas of design, history, theory, housing and landscape at Ryerson. Before coming to Ryerson, his academic career included appointments at the University of Toronto Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, the Harvard University Career Discovery Program and Columbia University offering courses in architecture, landscape architecture and historic preservation.  Before his academic appointment, George Thomas Kapelos was engaged in architectural practice and planning in the public and private sectors.

George Thomas Kapelos was Chair of the Ryerson University Department of Architectural Science from 2002 – 2007, during which time he oversaw significant revisions to the undergraduate curriculum and the introduction of two new graduate programs, the professional Master of Architecture and the Master of Building Science.  In 2010 the Master of Architecture program received accreditation from the Canadian Architectural Certification Board.  At Ryerson he has served the University in a number of capacities including the Presidential Appointment Review Committee, the University’s Master Planning Committee and as an elected member of University Senate.

He is past president of the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada, past Chair of the Toronto Society of Architects, a Senior Fellow at Massey College (Toronto) and was elected to the College of Fellows of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 2007.  As curator of the exhibition “Interpretations of Nature” George Thomas Kapelos received an award of merit from the Canadian Museums Association.  He is an architect licensed by the Ontario Association of Architects and a Registered Professional Planner of the Ontario Provincial Planners Institute and maintains a small critical practice under his own name.
