Read Gmail Messages on Other Email Clients

We recommend using Gmail and other Google Apps on the web in Google Chrome because of, but not limited to, the following reasons:

  1. The web-based search engine in Gmail is powerful and much faster than using email clients. Use the drop-down “show search options” by clicking on the downward pointing arrow inside the search field.
  2. Gmail in a web browser works seamlessly with the other Google Apps (Calendar, Drive and Docs, etc.). It is easy to navigate between Apps.
  3. Since Gmail and Google Apps were designed to be used in a browser, new features will always be available using the browser.
  4. You will be able to take advantage of the label functionality (compared to folders in other mail clients). Labels are a powerful tool for organizing mail, with the ability to apply multiple labels to messages, for easier retrieval.

Alternatively, if you still prefer to use an email program or client such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, or Apple Mail please follow the Setup section below.

Note: Google Token should not be confused with your my.ryerson password that you would use to access your Gmail and Google Apps account through a web browser.

Remember to always replace ‘your full email address (including @gmail.com or @your_domain.com)’ with your full Ryerson Gmail address including @ryerson.ca. When prompted for a password, use your Google Token.

If you want to use Post Office Protocol (POP) instead of recommended IMAP external, follow Google's general instructions for Set-up POP in mail clients.

Note: During migration, if you choose to set up an email client, we suggest not attempting to change your folder structure or rename any folders within the mail client until your Ryerson migration is complete as this may interfere with the migration.
