Building Science (MBSc/MASc)

Curriculum

The two year MASc option is aimed at those students who want to focus on an in depth study of a particular aspect of building science, and this culminates in a major research thesis. MASc students do five courses in their first year and then focus on research working closely with a faculty supervisor to complete their thesis. The MASc is a two year full time program and places are restricted by the resources available from faculty to provide the necessary research support.

The MBSc is aimed at those who prefer to do more courses and complete the program more quickly, doing a smaller and shorter research project. MBSc students take eight courses and do a Major Research Project (MRP) which is shorter and less demanding than a thesis. It is possible for full time students to complete the MBSc  program in one full calendar year, although some students take longer. Also, MBSc students can take the program part time over a period of two to five years.

The program offers a core component of building science theory, and students will have the opportunity to choose specialist areas through their electives and research projects or theses. By choosing appropriate courses, students may be able to satisfy the educational requirements for the Building Science Specialist of Ontario (BSSO) designation administered by Ontario Building Envelope Council (subject to agreement with OBEC).
