Feeling overwhelmed by your MRP or thesis? Need someone to talk to?
Counselling services are available for graduate students at the YSGS office Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call the external,Centre for Student Development and Counselling (CSDC) at 416-979-5195.
Following an initial consultation at the CSDC (350 Victoria St., room JOR-07C), counsellors select a model of care tailored to each client’s particular needs. Services include individual counselling and psychotherapy, group therapy, peer support groups and drop-in external,Take Care groups.
“Graduate students are more likely to experience unique challenges associated with their research progress including motivation for longer-term academic projects, and resolving interpersonal conflict with supervisors where tremendous power differences exist,” says Dr. Sarah Thompson, CSDC clinical coordinator.
Dr. Maria Chaparro, psychologist, holds office hours at YSGS Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Counsellor David McNeill, MSW, is available on Wednesdays.
“Grad students face different challenges than undergrads, such as an unstructured learning environment, time pressures, and later life-stage issues such as finances and relationships,” says Dr. Chaparro.
Common issues among grad students are balancing academic and interpersonal needs, stress management and imposter syndrome, in which high-achieving individuals have difficulty internalizing accomplishments and fear being exposed as a fraud.
“Having a counsellor who is sensitive to supervisor dynamics, to maintaining motivation in alignment with long-term goals and values, and to supporting couples is important in effectively supporting our graduate students,” says Dr. Thompson.
