Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program (OGS)

Since 1975, Ontario, in partnership with Ontario’s publicly-assisted universities, has encouraged excellence in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels through the awarding of Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS). OGS awards are merit-based scholarships available to students in all disciplines of academic study. The OGS program is funded by the Province of Ontario and by Ontario universities. The Province of Ontario contributes two-thirds of the value of the award while Ryerson University provides one-third.

Standard Eligibility Criteria

  •  Plan to be enrolled full-time in a graduate program at Ryerson University

  •  Canadian citizen, permanent resident or an international student studying on a visa (please note there is a very small number of awards available for international students)
  •  If completing the final year of an undergraduate program or entering the first or second year of graduate studies at the time of application a student must have an overall average of at least A-, or the equivalent, in the last 20 one-term/semester courses completed
  • If entering the third year of graduate studies at the time of application a student must have an overall average of at least A- or equivalent, in all graduate courses completed 

Duration of the Award

Each OGS is tenable for a maximum of one year (three terms) and a minimum of two consecutive terms.

Eligibility Conditions

There is a lifetime maximum of six years of OGS per student. 

In addition, the lifetime maximum of government-funded student awards must not exceed 6 years.  The following are included in this count:

  • Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program
  •  Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology
    (formerly known as OGSST)
  • Ontario Trillium Scholarships
  • Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada
  • Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council
  •  Canadian  Institute of Health Research

Applicants cannot hold an OGS scholarship and an award from any of the 
following programs, concurrently:

  •  Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology
    (formerly known as OGSST)
  • Ontario Trillium Scholarships
  • Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada
  • Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council
  • Canadian  Institute of Health Research

Recipients must remain enrolled as a full-time student in an eligible program. Recipients who withdraw, transfer to part-time status, or fail to complete the term, will be required to repay the award for incomplete and future terms.

For clarity, a withdrawal in the second term willnot requires repayment of the award from first term.
