RYERSON UNIVERSITY: Mechanical Engineerng Graduate Program

Program Requirements

The minimum and maximum times allowed for course-work and research in the programs are indicated in the table given below. Transfer from full-time to part-time Master’s status, and vice versa, needs the approval of the School of Graduate Studies, particularly when the maximum time span allowed for program completion could become an important factor for consideration.

The School of Graduate Studies requires continuous registration throughout the residency period for all students in the program, either PhD or Masters full-time or part-time, in which the student is registered.

Grade Requirements

Graduate students must repeat a course, or substitute with an alternate course, if a course mark is less than B- (70%) for both Meng and MASc, and less than B (73%) for PhD. Failure to maintain an acceptable academic standing could result in a student being asked to withdraw from the program. Failure in more than one graduate course shall be considered grounds for dismissal.

Degree Requirements

Students can select to enter the Doctoral program (PhD, Full-time), Master of Applied Science (MASc, Full-time) or the Master of Engineering (MEng, Full-time/Part-time).

1All courses are one semester and are equal to one course credit
2MEng students may apply to substitute 2 courses for the Project (see Course Option)
3Approval of OVGS or any external non-Ryerson course is contingent upon the availability of resources
4A student enrolled in the MEng, MASc or PhD program is permitted to take only one (1) ME 8135 "Directed Studies in Mechanical Engineering" course.
5A student is permitted to take not more than two (2) courses taught by his/her supervisor, one of which may be the ME 8135 "Directed Studies in Mechanical Engineering" course.

The PhD postgraduate program requires the successful completion of four one-term graduate courses, pass a qualifying/candidacy examination (for more information please refer to the PhD Candidacy Examination Guide) and a dissertation based on original research.  The supervisor must approve both the course selections and the dissertation research proposal submitted in writing by the student.  With the approval of the supervisor, one of the four courses may be the directed studies course (ME8135), normally conducted by the supervisor. The student's supervisor, after consultation with the student, will recommend to the Program Director the appointment of a Supervisory Committee.  Within 20 months of initial registration, every student in the PhD program will undertake an oral and written candidacy examination.  The core aspect of the program is the successful defense of the doctorial dissertation at both Program and School of Graduate Studies oral examinations.

The MASc postgraduate program requires the successful completion of five one-term course credits and a research thesis. No undergraduate credits may be taken towards the degree. A maximum of two of the required five courses can be taken outside of the MIEGP. The supervisor for each graduate student must approve the graduate course selection. The supervisor must also approve the proposed thesis plan, which will be presented in writing by the student. Course selections are normally confirmed through a Program of Study agreement between supervisor and student, with the approval of the Director. With the approval of the supervisor, one of the five courses may be the directed studies course (ME8135), normally conducted by the supervisor. An oral presentation of the research thesis, and results, will be arranged in a seminar format. The examination committee will assess the candidate's research thesis.

The MEng postgraduate program (project option) requires the successful completion of eight one-term courses and a major project. No undergraduate credits may be taken towards the degree. No more than two of the required eight courses can be taken outside of the MIEGP. The program director must approve the graduate course selection. The faculty advisor must also approve the proposed project plan, which will be presented in writing by the student. Course selections are normally confirmed through a Program of Study agreement between supervisor and student, with the approval of the Director. With the approval of the faculty advisor, one of the eight courses may be the directed studies course (ME8135), normally conducted by the faculty advisor. An oral presentation of the project report, and results, will be arranged in a seminar format. The examination committee will assess the candidate's project report. There is also a course-only option available in the MEng program, where students may apply to substitute 2 courses for the major project.

The MEng postgraduate program (course option only) requires the successful completion of twn one-term courses.   No undergraduate credits may be taken towards the degree. No more than two of the required ten courses can be taken outside of the MIEGP. The program director must approve the graduate course selection.
