MHSc IN NUTRITION COMMUNICATION
Admission Requirements


Academic Requirements for Option I: DC Accredited Practicum (subject to final approval by Dietitians of Canada)

1.    Completion of a Dietitians of Canada accredited undergraduate degree in Food and Nutrition with a minimum B average (3.0/4.33) in the last two years of study AND a minimum of a B (or equivalent) in at least one course in each of the five areas:

1)    research methods (or equivalent)
2)    introduction to statistics (or equivalent)
3)    interpersonal/professional communications
4)    biological sciences (e.g., physiology, biochemistry)
5)    social sciences (e.g. sociology, psychology);

2.    A completed "Confirmation of Completion" form (from the current DC Internship application package) from your undergraduate program or Dietitians of Canada verifying your eligibility to apply for a DC accredited graduate practicum.

3.    A test of English language proficiency for those whose previous language of instruction wat not English.

Academic Requirements for OPTION II: Major Research Project or Paper & OPTION III: Course Only


1.    Completion of a four year Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in nutrition and food with a minimum B average (3.0/4.33) in the last two years of study AND a minimum of a B (or equivalent) in at least one course in each of the five areas:

1)    research methods (or equivalent)
2)    introduction to statistics (or equivalent)
3)    interpersonal/professional communications
4)    biological sciences (e.g., physiology, biochemistry)
5)    social sciences (e.g. sociology, psychology);


2.    A test of English language proficiency for those whose previous language of instruction wat not English.

Required Application Documents for all three options

1.    A statement of interest in the MHSc program addressing the following:

  • your reasons for pursuing this particular graduate program;
  • how your previous studies and experience have prepared you for the program
  • your career objectives and how this graduate degree will advance them.


2.    A current résumé that concisely conveys your volunteer and paid experiences and educational background. Highlight the aspects of your education and experiences through which you have developed the communications skills that make you an ideal candidate for graduate study in Nutrition Communication at Ryerson University.
 
3.     Two confidential letters of recommendation at least ONE of which must be completed by an academic referee (e.g. a faculty member familiar with your academic performance). The second recommendation may be completed by a professional (non-academic) referee.

4.     Two independently completed and verifiable communication products that demonstrate your communication skills.   One submission must be a text-based product that demonstrates your writing skills. For text-based materials, submit complete documents; excerpts will not be accepted. While the materials submitted may be existing works or something created specifically for this application, they must be materials that you created by yourself within the past three years.   Works may include reports, brochures, audio and/or video materials, visual arts, published papers (on which the applicant was first author), etc. No more than one PowerPoint document can be included in this submission.  Materials are not normally returned. For each communication product submitted, please complete a cover sheet with the following information:

a)     A paragraph (maximum 300 words) stating the title of the work, describing the background of the product, your role in the creation of the product, the date the product was created, and how the product demonstrates your communication capacities.

b)     The name, affiliation and contact information for a professional colleague who can verify your role in the production of the material (e.g., an academic advisor, employer, supervisor). In the case of broadcast media products, please provide the name and contact information for an appropriate person at the media outlet/organization.

5.     Official transcripts for all relevant post secondary education will be requested if an admissions offer is made.

6.    Proof of English language proficiency, for those whose previous language of instruction was not English. For more information, please visit the Graduate Admissions Office website

 

PLEASE NOTE: Short-listed MHSc program applicants will be contacted to arrange an interview with an admissions committee.  Interview performance will be assessed using a criteria-based scoring system. More details will be provided to applicants who are invited for an interview.
