Bio and Research Interests

Janet Chappell is a paediatric dietitian by training who is inspired on a daily basis by the students and communities that she currently works with in her capacity as associate professor in the School of Nutrition.

While the School Director, Janet helped to establish Ryerson’s internationally educated dietitians' bridging to practice program [IDPP] which is currently funded by the Government of Ontario, as well as Ryerson’s Physical Activity: Assessment and Promotion Certificate for nutrition and food professionals [which may soon be certified by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiologists].

Along with School of Nutrition colleagues and hundreds of Ontario professionals, she continues to facilitate various initiatives which may lead to significant Ontario undergraduate ‘dietetics’ curriculum changes. Janet and a group of First Nations graduates of our program and dietetics practitioners were recently funded [LTO: Teaching about Diversity Fund] to develop culturally appropriate Aboriginal ‘nutrition and food’ course modules titled ‘from under the table’.

Within the highly polarized discourse related to nutrition and increasingly nutritionism, Janet attempts to create a middle ground [both personally and professionally] which - while her approach may be critiqued as being the equivalent of sitting on the proverbial fence – represents an acknowledgement of and interest in working with - everyday realities.
