Nutrition Communication (MHSc)

About the Program

The School of Nutrition offers a graduate program leading to a Master of Health Science (MHSc) degree in Nutrition Communication that is unique in Canada. The School is a leader in the education of nutrition and food professionals. This program, and its focus on nutrition communication, builds upon a unique undergraduate program as well as the emerging graduate programs in the School of Graduate Studies. Throughout the course of study, students develop advanced knowledge and skills in the interpretation and communication of nutrition and food issues to audiences that range from small, via individual and group counseling, to large, via traditional mass media and new media.

This program is supported by the Interpersonal Skills Centre in the Faculty of Community Services, the Centre for Studies in Food Security, the School of Nutrition-based Centre for Online Nutrition Communications, and new graduate programs in the Faculty of Communication & Design.  Students have the option of undertaking a Major Research Paper (MRP)/Project, practicum, or additional coursework.  Graduates will be well prepared for working within the realms of public and community health, and policy development within governmental and non-governmental organizations.  Within health care facilities and emerging family health teams, graduates will provide advanced counseling and professional practice. Graduates will also be prepared to work with journalists and other media personnel, and within agencies or industries as nutrition communication specialists.

The MHSc program offered through the School of Nutrition at Ryerson University is not intended to be a DC accredited graduate program. Applicants who are interested in becoming dietitians should consult the College of Dietitians of Ontario (http://www.cdo.on.ca/) and the Dietitians of Canada (DC) (http://www.dietitians.ca/) websites for detailed information. Membership in this regulated health profession is granted to individuals who pass the Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination (CDRE). There are two paths through which one can qualify to write the CDRE: 1) completion of an DC accredited undergraduate program and a dietetic internship, OR 2) completion of a DC accredited graduate program.
