This session will present a wide spectrum of Library research methods. Information sources including journal databases, digital facilitators, federated search engines, the deep web and open access portals to research and institutional depositories will be explored. Cited reference searching and an introduction to qualitative and quantitative journal ranking will also be covered.

RefWorks is a Web-based program you can use to organize your research, enter citations as you work, import references retrieved from online bibliographic databases into your personal RefWorks database and create bibliographies in a variety of formats. This workshop will also cover advanced RefWorks functions including the effective use of RefShare, RefGrabit and RSS Feeds.

LaTeX replaces word processors for technical writing, as it provides automatic formatting and enables equations, tables, etc. to be included as text. It is useful for those who plan to write technical books, dissertations, or articles for publication. This workshop will explore various data resources that are available to the Ryerson community including Statistics Canada sources, ICPSR resources (Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research), ODESI(Ontario Data Documentation, Extraction Service and Infrastructure)–a digital repository for social science data–and polling data. Evaluating, accessing and downloading data sets for research purposes will also be covered.

Canadian Copyright Essentials for Graduate Students

If you use copyrighted material in your thesis, did you know you may need permission from the copyright holder to do so? As a graduate student you are both a creator and a user of copyrighted material. Issues that will be discussed in this workshop will be: who owns the intellectual property of work you do as a graduate student or employee of Ryerson; how to comply with and check copyright requirements for your thesis submission; and what you should know about copyright as a teaching and research assistant.
Using practical examples, this workshop will provide a brief history of copyright in Canada, a summary of recent changes, as well as guidance for the use of copyrighted materials in your research and teaching. Learn about issues you need to be aware of regarding intellectual property and copyright, both now and in your future academic career.

Group work can be used as an effective tool to help students learn from each other, build community and engage in the course content. The key to the success of a group is in the planning and understanding of the purpose of the work needed.
In this session you will learn about project management concepts and how they can be applied to facilitating your students’ group work. We will explore project management processes through the use of examples and exercises. Attendees will learn useful strategies that will help students to understand and define their roles in a group. We will explore ways of planning, collaborating and communicating that you can use to help your students work effectively within a group. Learn what you need to know about fair dealing and Canada's copyright environment.

This workshop will be particularly useful for any TAs and GAs who are and will be grading assignments and examinations.
