Programs

Students could be asked to repeat a course if a course mark is less than B- (70%) for MASc and M.Eng, and B (73%) for PhD.  Graduate students are allowed to repeat no more than one course during their tenure in the program. Failure to maintain an acceptable academic standing could result in a student being asked to withdraw from the program. Failure in more than one graduate course shall be considered grounds for dismissal.

Degree Requirements

Students can select to enter the Doctoral program (PhD, Full-time), Master of Applied Science (MASc, Full-time) or the Master of Engineering (MEng, Full-time/Part-time).

All courses are one semester and are equal to one course credit

The PhD program requires the successful completion of four one-term graduate courses, pass a qualifying/candidacy examination (for more information please refer to the PhD Candidacy Examination Guide) and produce a thesis based on original research. The thesis supervisor must approve both the course selections and the thesis research proposal submitted in writing by the student.  With the approval of the supervisor, one of the four courses may be the directed studies course (CV8100), normally conducted by the supervisor. The student's supervisor, after consultation with the student, will recommend to the Program Director the appointment of a Candidacy Examination Committee.  Within 16 months of initial registration, every student in the PhD program will undertake a candidacy examination.  The core aspect of the program is the successful defense of the doctorial dissertation at both Program and School of Graduate Studies oral examinations.

The MASc program requires the successful completion of five one-term course credits and a research thesis. No undergraduate credits may be taken towards the degree. No less than two of the required five courses must be taken at Ryerson. The supervisor for each graduate student must approve the graduate course selection. The supervisor must also approve the proposed thesis plan, which will be presented in writing by the student. Course selections are normally confirmed through a Program of Study agreement between supervisor and student, with the approval of the Director. With the approval of the supervisor, one of the five courses may be the directed studies course (CV8100), normally conducted by the supervisor. An oral presentation of the research thesis, and results, will be arranged in a seminar format. The examination committee will assess the candidate's research thesis.

The MEng program requires the successful completion of eight one-term courses and a major project. No undergraduate credits may be taken towards the degree. No less than four of the required eight courses must be taken at Ryerson. The faculty advisor for each graduate student must approve the graduate course selection. The faculty advisor must also approve the proposed project plan, which will be presented in writing by the student. Course selections are normally confirmed through a Program of Study agreement between faculty advisor and student, with the approval of the Director. With the approval of the faculty advisor, one of the eight courses may be the directed studies course (CV8100), normally conducted by the faculty advisor. An oral presentation of the project report, and results, will be arranged in a seminar format. The examination committee will assess the candidate's project report.
