The Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO) was established in 2000
following the passing of the Professional Geoscientists Act, 2000.
The legislation established a regulated association of geoscientists with the power
to admit only qualified persons, to encourage continuing professional competence,
to discipline members for professional misconduct and to prevent unqualified individuals from practicing.
Geoscience practitioners include geophysicists, geochemists, hydrogeologists, terrain and coastal
geomorphologists and environmental geoscientists practicing in the areas of mining, water resources,
environmental protection and remediation, energy, development, planning, and education.
The core entry requirement for admission to professional practice is a
four year Bachelor of Science degree in geoscience awarded by a Canadian University. An equivalent
credential may be recognized by the APGO registration committee after an assessment of its academic
content against a representative undergraduate degree to determine if the APGO minimum criteria for
admission to professional practice have been met. The minimum requirement for registration
(certification) as a professional geoscientist (P.Geo.) is at least four years of verifiable and
acceptable work experience. The applicant may be granted up to 12 months credit for pre-graduation
experience gained prior to receiving a bachelor's degree, and an additional 12 months credit for work
experience gained for either a master's or doctoratal program. At least 12 months of the work
experience must have been obtained in
