Minimum Academic Requirements to Apply to the Master's Program (MASc)

  • The program is open to graduates with an honours degree from a recognized university in any of the environmentally related disciplines including but not limited to:

    Natural and Physical Sciences
    :  for example, biology, chemistry, ecology, environmental sciences,geology;

    Engineering
    : chemical, civil, environmental, industrial, mechanical;

    Professional Programs
    : public and occupational health, urban and regional planning, forestry, agriculture and other resource management disciplines; and

    Social Sciences: geography, environmental studies (and specializations within other disciplines).

    Holders of other degrees may apply.  Their applications will be considered for admission on an individual basis.
  • Master’s applicants must have obtained a minimum 3.00/4.33 GPA (B average or equivalent) in the last two years of the undergraduate degree.
  • Statistics:
    At least one one-term statistics degree credit is required in the applicant’s undergraduate degree.  A one-term course normally is four months' long and have a total of 36 to 40 hours of classes in a term.

    Applicants who do not have any statistics course credit may submit a master’s program application provided the minimum academic requirements to apply stated above are met.

    Candidates who are offered admission without the statistics degree credit will be required to complete this requirement preferably prior to the first term of study in the master’s program or during the first year of study after admission.  Any degree credit statistics course completed at the Continuing Education Division of Ryerson University (C.E.) or at any Canadian universities is acceptable.  Graduate students enrol in C.E. courses will be responsible for paying the C.E. cost fee; the graduate program fee does not cover the C.E. cost fee.

Minimum Academic Requirement to Apply to the Doctoral Program (PhD)

  • Candidates who are holders of a master’s degree in an environmentally related discipline and have achieved a minimum 3.33/4.33 GPA (B+ average or equivalent) in the masters program may submit a PhD Application for Admission. 
  • Refer to the section above for a list of environmentally related disciplines.  Masters degree holders in other academic disciplines will be considered on an individual basis.
  • Candidates are also required to demonstrate research potential in the way of a master's thesis or research project indicated in the academic transcript or in a publication that has appeared in a refereed journal or conference proceedings.

APPLYING FOR ADMISSION

For information on the deadline to apply, the online application process, and English language proficiency, visit or contact the Graduate Admissions Office (www.ryerson.ca/graduate /admissions/). 

The Environmental Applied Science and Management Graduate Programs accept Fall term applications only (starting in September); there is no application for the Winter term (starting in January) or Spring/Summer term (starting in May).

Required Documents in an Application

A standard graduate program application must comprise of the Application Submission Summary, a Statement of Interest, a Resume/CV, Letters of Recommendation, Transcripts, and where applicable, proof of English Language Proficiency. Refer to the Graduate Studies Admissions web site "Prepare Your Application" web site for detailed instructions (in Material Checklist).  Information outlined below is additional program-specific information pertaining to the “Statement of Interest” and “Letters of Recommendation”.

Statement of Interest

Prepare your Statement of Interest before you apply online.  The statement is part of the “Required Documents” of your application.  Follow the instructions provided by Graduate Studies Admissions during the online application process  to submit the statement electronically.

Format

Prepare any word processing document following the formatting guidelines provided below:

  1. In the top right corner in one line of each page, indicate your full name with the surname (or family name) in capital letters, and the program code of the program you are applying;
  2. Program Codes:  AM001 (master’s full-time);  AM002 (master’s part-time); AM003 (PhD).
  3. For example, if John Smith is applying for the master’s full-time program, “John SMITH, AM001” should be appearing in the top right corner of each page of the statement.
  4. All text must be in 10 pt or larger Times Roman font; and
  5. Margins must be set at a minimum of 1” (inch).
  6. Each Statement must include Part A and Part B in one document.

Part A of the Statement

Indicate “Part A: Potential Faculty Supervisors” as the heading of this section.

Provide names of the professors with whom you would like to study and conduct graduate research under their supervision.  These professors must be faculty members affiliated to this program.   Refer to the list of Faculty Members online.

Up to a maximum of five names may be provided.  

Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact professors to discuss research supervision opportunities before or during the application process. 

Part B of the Statement

Indicate “Part B: Statement of Interest” as the heading of this section.  Master’s applicants must add “Master’s Thesis Option” or “Master’s Project Option” in the heading. 

Part B of the statement should be no more than 1,000 words in length.

The statement should address the following:

  • your reasons for graduate study in Environmental Applied Science and Management;
  • the research interest(s) you may wish to pursue in a master’s thesis or research project or doctoral dissertation;
  • how your previous studies and experience have prepared you for the program; and
  • your career objectives and how this degree program relates to them.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

The Letters of Recommendation are part of the “Required Documents” in your application.  Follow the prompts during the online application process for instructions to provide information of your referees.   If you have any question about submitting the letters or your referees come across any technical issue in uploading the documents online, please contact the Graduate Studies Admissions for assistance (grdadmit@ryerson.ca).

Master’s Applications:   TWO academic recommendations are required for each master’s full- and part-time application. 

PhD Applications: THREE academic recommendations are required for each doctoral application.

  • The recommendations MUST be provided by the applicant’s former professors or research supervisors who are familiar with the applicants’ abilities in graduate study and scholarly research.
  • Master's Part-time applicants who are working in an environmentally related field and are unable to provide two academic references may submit a professional letter to replace one of the two academic references.  At least one academic reference must be provided.
