Institute of Professional Environmental Practice (IPEP)

Jump to www.ipep.orgThe Institute of Professional Environmental Practice (IPEP) is the independent certifying organization for the Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP) certification and the Environmental Professional Intern (EPI) certification.  IPEP's stated objectives include improving the practice and educational standards of environmental professionals and the administration of QEP and EPI applications, examinations and certification processes.  The QEP credential is among only five environmental credentials that comply with The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard E 1929-98, Standard Practice for the Assessment of Certification Programs for Environmental Professionals: Accreditation Criteria.

The QEP certification serves as a confirmation that the professional demonstrates a broad understanding of the environment and environmental issues, shows a strong commitment to excellence in applied environmental science, and adheres to a strict code of ethics.  The EPI certification is an entry-level certification that is typically taken by students about to graduate, or professionals having entered the field within the last five years.  To obtain EPI certification, candidates must pass a general environmental science exam (part 1 of the QEP certification written exam process).  EPIs have the opportunity to be assigned a QEP as a mentor to assist with career guidance.

The minimum requirements for QEP certification include a baccalaureate or equivalent degree in physical, earth or natural sciences, engineering, or mathematics and five subsequent years of professional environmental work experience, or eight subsequent years of professional environmental work experience with a baccalaureate degree in a discipline other than those listed above.

The QEP certification is considered by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to be a “desirable qualification that can assist applicants in their ability to successfully compete for positions and promotions at EPA”.  In addition, the EPA's Office of Acquisition Management has indicated “the QEP certification serves to distinguish a highly competent and accomplished individual in the environmental field”.

It should be noted that the QEP certification is designed to be a multidisciplinary and international certification, making it appealing to both engineers and scientists practicing in Canada, the USA, and other countries in the environmental field.
