Graduate Programs in Environmental Applied Science and Management

The graduate programs in Environmental Applied Science and Management at Ryerson University offer studies in environmental sciences, technology, and environmental management systems and decisionmaking at the masters and doctoral level. These multidisciplinary programs are for students from a number of related disciplines including biology, chemistry, ecology, engineering, geography, geology, public and occupational health, urban planning and environmental studies.

These programs combine the environmental applied sciences (chemical and biological pathways, air and water pollution, waste management, soil remediation, toxicology, applied biology, and biotechnology) with environmental management fields (law and policy, management systems, impact and risk assessment, decision making and strategic planning, as well as GIS applications) offering advanced studies and research opportunities in these fundamental fields.

Doctoral program

Full-time attendance at the university is expected of PhD candidates due to course and research requirements of the doctoral program. A part-time doctoral program is not available. The minimum residency requirement of the doctoral program is two years (or six consecutive terms).

Candidates will study in two fields which are the Environmental Science and Policy field and the Environmental Management and Decision Making field. Doctoral candidates must complete a minimum of four courses: one course in each of the two fields, one doctoral level research methods course, a course in Environmental Policies and Management. Participation in a doctoral seminar is required. A candidacy examination directed toward the candidate's area of research specialization normally is held in the candidate's second year of study. Following the completion of the dissertation, the candidate defends the dissertation.

At the recommendation of the candidate's supervising committee and with the approval of the Program Director, one or more additional courses may be required for students with a broader disciplinary background who need additional graduate preparation leading to the candidacy examination.

Doctoral Program Admission Requirements

Candidates who are holders of a masters degree in an environmentally related discipline and have achieved a minimum B+ average in the masters program may submit an application to Graduate Studies Admissions. Masters degree holders in other academic disciplines will be considered on an individual basis. Three letters of recommendation are required from academic referees who can judge the candidate's potential to engage in research at the doctoral level. Candidates are also required to demonstrate research potential in the way of a master's thesis or research project indicated in the academic transcript or in a publication that has appeared in a refereed journal or conference proceeding.
