Courses & Requirements

Full details on the courses and requirements for the Master’s and Doctoral programs are available in the Yeates School of Graduate Studies calendar.  A summary of the key requirements for both the Master’s and Doctoral programs are provided below.

Master's Program

Required Courses

MASc Thesis Option (7 courses)

3 courses are required (ES8901, ES8921 or ES8920, ES8930)

MASc Project Option (10 courses)

3 courses are required (ES8901, ES8921 or ES8920, ES8930)

Electives

MASc Thesis Option (7 courses total)

  • 4 elective courses must be completed
  • A minimum of 1 elective must be selected from Group A
  • A minimum of 1 elective must be selected from Group B
  • The remaining 2 electives may be chosen from Groups A, B, and/or C.

MASc Project Option (10 courses total)

  • 7 elective courses must be completed
  • A minimum of 2 electives must be selected from Group A
  • A minimum of 2 electives must be selected from Group B
  • The remaining 3 electives may be chosen from Groups A, B, and/or C.
Research Component

Doctoral Program

Year 1
  • A total of 4 courses must be completed
  • There are 2 required courses: ES9001 and ES9002
  • One elective course must be completed from each of Groups A and B
  • In addition to the 4 courses, a PhD seminar must also be completed
Year 2
  • A dissertation proposal should be developed
  • A candidacy examination, consisting of both written and oral components, should be completed
Year 3+
  • Conduct dissertation research
  • Prepare written dissertation
  • Complete final dissertation defense
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication (as necessary)
