Master of Nursing
Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ADMISSION CYCLE FOR 2010 IS NOW CLOSED
Ryerson University is pleased to offer the Certificate in Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner (PHCNP) Program. This program is for applicants with a minimum preparation of a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing from a program accredited by CASN or approved by the appropriate provincial body. Students enrolled in the PHCNP curriculum have the option of one of two pathways towards obtaining a certificate in PHCNP.
Option I is for those individuals that are interested in a certificate in PHCNP only. Students choosing this pathway enroll in the required seven PHCNP courses and, upon successful completion, are eligible to write the Canadian Nurse Practitioner Exam.
Option II is for those individuals that are interested in both a Master of Nursing (MN) degree and a certificate in PHCNP. Students choosing Option II must successfully complete four core courses from the Master of Nursing in addition to completing the PHCNP program curriculum. Upon successful completion of all requirements from both programs, students are eligible to write the Canadian Nurse Practitioner Exam.
Both pathways provide preparation for the academic credential of a Certificate in Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner.
Applicants who do not have a Master’s degree in Nursing are strongly encouraged to consider taking Option II - the PHCNP program in conjunction with the Master of Nursing, as advanced practice roles nationally and internationally have moved to graduate level preparation.
Our primary objectives in offering the PHCNP Program are to:
1. Prepare Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioners who are competent in the provision of care to individuals, families and communities.
2. Provide opportunities for students to analyse and integrate theories, models, concepts, and frameworks from advanced practice nursing, nursing, and related disciplines that form the basis for the role of the Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner.
3. Prepare graduates who can incorporate principles of evidence-based practice and contribute to knowledge development for the role of the Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner.
4. Prepare nurses to practice in the PHCNP role in an ethical and legal manner that reflects an understanding of human values, diversity, and health and social policy related issues.
Please note that both pathways can be completed on either a full-time or a part-time basis. Candidates considering a pathway towards obtaining only a certificate in PHCNP (Option I) have a maximum of 9 semesters or 3 academic years to successfully complete the PHCNP program. Students that have chosen Option II (a certificate in PHCNP and a MN degree) have a maximum of four years or 12 semesters to successfully complete all requirements from both programs.
