Dr. Barton is a nurse practitioner in primary health care and has been teaching at Ryerson since 2000. She has served as a board director in several community health centres in Ontario. Dr. Barton has also been involved in the development of the Canadian Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies and she continues to be a reviewer and consultant of nurse practitioner educational programs throughout Canada. Dr. Barton’s research focuses on the symbiotic health relationship between animals and humans using the One Health Framework. She is a recipient of the Anne DeNardo McGowan DNP Leadership Award from Carlow University in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Barton is actively involved in interprofessional education and has been a member of the planning committee of the University of Toronto, Department of Family & Community Medicine’s Primary Care Today conference since 2005.
