In 2005, the Department of History’s Dr. Arne Kislenko was named Ontario’s “Best Lecturer” by TVOntario viewers following the inaugural Big Ideas competition. Arne founded the History Travel Award with the funds he received from TVOntario and its sponsor, TD Meloche Mennox, which then were supplemented with additional support, including contributions from former and current faculty in the department, from Ryerson History alumni, and from the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS).

Focusing on Dr. Kislenko’s twin loves of history and travel, the award allows students to take courses at the prestigious Freie Universitat Berlin International Summer program (FUBIS) and travel in Europe as part of their studies.

For further details on the History Travel Award, application procedure, and how to contribute to improve Ryerson’s ability to fund student travel, please go to www.kislenko.com/com/scholarship.htm or contact Dr. Kislenko at 416 979-5000, ext. 6206, or akislenk@ryerson.ca.

The Maurice Pope Scholarship in History is given in memory of Maurice Arthur Pope (1889-1978), a prominent Canadian civil engineer, army officer, and diplomat. During the Second World War, Brigadier-General Pope served at Canadian military headquarters in London, on the military staff of Prime Minister W.L. Mackenzie King, and, in 1945, became chief of the Canadian Military Mission in Berlin. He also served as ambassador to Belgium (1950-53) and Spain (1953-56). In 1962, his memoirs, Soldiers and Politicians, were published. Maurice Pope was the son of Sir Joseph Pope, Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald’s principal secretary.

This scholarship is awarded to a student entering his or her third or fourth year in the History Program or the Arts and Contemporary Studies program who has demonstrated academic excellence in at least four of the Department of History’s courses.

Founded in 1834, when Toronto was a community of 9,300 people within the colonial Province of Upper Canada, The St. George's Society of Toronto is the city's oldest charity. Originally it provided assistance to immigrants from England and Wales in the form of food, money, and medical care. The Society has evolved along with the city, and today it addresses needs across a broad spectrum, including funding medical research and AIDS organizations, assisting homeless single mothers and veterans, helping youth attend university, and supporting culture in Toronto, while also providing a congenial home for its members and guests to enjoy things English. The Society generously donated the funding to support this award, valued at $1000 per annum.

The St. George's Society Scholarship in British History recognizes the best performing full-time undergraduate student in the Department of History's upper level British history courses, as determined by the department's awards committee. No application is necessary. For more information, contact the chair of the Department of History.

Department of History Internal Awards

The Department of History Internal Awards recognize excellence among students studying History. Please note that:

  • the department offers additional awards beyond those listed here, sponsored by individuals and organizations;
  • students may be eligible for awards beyond those sponsored by the department;
  • students do not need to apply for the department’s Internal Awards but need to apply for some of the Sponsored Awards listed separately and for other kinds of financial assistance offered by Ryerson University;
  • the department may decide not to make a particular award in a given year.

The department recognizes the student in either the History Program or the History Option of Arts and Contemporary studies who attains the highest average grade in each of the second, third, and fourth year of study over a minimum of two HIS and/or HST courses. The minimum qualification is an “A” average over at least two courses and at least a “B” average over all the courses taken in the year of the award. Each award is worth $250.

The department recognizes, respectively, the best History essay in each academic year in an “upper” and “lower” level HIS and/or HST course (i.e., those numbered from 100-499 and those numbered from 500-999). Only students in their first or second year of studies are eligible for the “Junior” award but all students are eligible for the “Senior” award. The winners must have a grade average in all of their courses (History and non-History) of at least a “B” for the year in which they receive the award. The award winners are selected by a committee of the Department of History. Each award is worth $250.

The department recognizes students in their graduating year who have achieved the highest and second-highest grades in the History Program or the History Option in ACS, respectively, averaged over all the HIS and HST courses taken at Ryerson. The Gold Medal is worth $500 and the Silver Medal $350.

The Department of History annually recognizes the student deemed by a committee of the department to have contributed most to the program, activities, and endeavours of the department. All History Program and History Option students in ACS are eligible, but the winning student also must have at least an overall average of “B” in his or her History and non-History courses in the year for which the award is made. It is worth $250.
